According to the entry for Melbourne Jazz Limited in the Australian Business Register (accessible at tinyurl.com/65ma6n), the company is in fact a charitable institution (i.e. one that is established and run to advance or promote a charitable purpose). OK, that must have happened after my time. By the way, the Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz (while not a charitable institution) is a non-profit organisation, listed on the Register Of Cultural Organisations. So any donations to WFOJ are fully tax-deductible. If you know any moneybags who like jazz and need to reduce their tax bill, point them this way. I promise we'll use the money wisely!

Thanks to everyone that has posted answers to my questions -especially andrewh I would really hate someone who happened to work in the same building as me to be judging my work on a public forum. True, It was a low blow and I apologise.

True, It was a low blow and I apologise. Well Erin, have to say you are teaching us all how to behave in a more grown up fashion here. I rarely apolgise for my insults, which are usually fully intended and sometimes totally unintentional. Time for me to grow up I guess! Seriously I think it was Mark who raised the matter that if this forum could stay more focussed on what we can do rather then just using it to let off steam it could work as a much stronger lobbying tool. People quote what gets written here in public, on radio and elsewhere. So it is a campaigning tool for a better deal. What we need, perhaps is a Fair Trade for Jazz type of campaign.

Erin - I really like your positive, constructive approach. Could I ask you, and other constructive posters, to have a look at the Melbourne Jazz Collective thread, please? You sound like the sort of person I am looking for.

It looks like some of those Board Members have had a fair stint. Boards I have worked with have a 3-7year limit of how long you can stay there. Does anyone know if you are allowed to just stay on boards forever? Is that why Dadon became CEO? They have a very small Board. Five people would only just make a quorum at an AGM. I think it is time for some new or extra board members. I guess the CEO would appoint them. Yay. I'm surprised that they don't have a specific Jazz 'specialist' on the board. Or does Tortoni fill that role?

One would hope that getting the position as AD of such a festival would mean you were some type of Jazz specialist? I have heard tell that Micheal has plans to form an Artistic advisory committee too? I thought it was his actually his job to make the decisions about the content? I guess sub-contracting is the way to go nowadays? Maybe I could get Phil Slater to play trumpet in my band? Would make my life easier, and maybe my music would sound better too?

I guess sub-contracting is the way to go nowadays? It's the clear choice for those without a clue.
