I have discovered a culinary jewel in Melbourne that some Melburnians themselves may not know about!
For years and years I have eaten when playing at Bennetts at the Pho noodle house just round the corner from Lonsdale into Russell.
No more pho!
You HAVE to try the Dhaka Restaurant, 145 Lonsdale just about about opposite the Church (a few shops towards Russell). AMAZINGLY gorgeous Bangladeshi/Indian food, tiny place, almost hole-in-the-wall, family run with genuine warmth and love.
The food is simply spectacular (and cheap as chips) but the triumph of triumphs (I had it two days running) is their Kheer (Indian rice pudding, $5).
Served piping hot in a large crescent-shaped bowl it is made on ground rice (like a semolina porridge), sinfully rich and creamy, fortified luxuriously by several types of ground nuts (including almonds and pistachios), aromatic spices (including cardamom) with a flourish of a red rose syrup pattern drizzled all over it like some mysterious inscription. It is like no "rice pudding" we have ever known and this version of Kheer is the ULTIMATE winter comfort food.
Please someone try it and tell me I'm not wrong!

Yes! - Dhaka is really fantastic - been going for awhile..An amazing goat curry for the carnivores out there...Theres also 'little lamb' which is just round the corner on Russel st - Northern Chinese/Taiwanese style - really fresh, cheap and good...

Hey you guys, have you noticed you live in Melbourne? The inexpensive high quality food in restaurants is the best in the world. No matter what Gourmet Traveller says. Yeah, those places are good for the soul and the wallet.
