Fairfax has cut heaps of staff recently. So perhaps the time is ripe for all OJF freelancers to strike with opinion pieces on the state of the arts or ____(fill in your favourite subject here). Fun launch for the publication at Wang, Miriam, but I do wish someone had led three cheers for YOU. I think you deserved some very loud applause as well as the contributors who read their work. Great cheese too! Thanks.

Fairfax can't get enough of Miriam (can I say OUR Miriam?) - a feature in the Good Weekend Mag as well!

Well, the way to get your name in those places is to engage a publicist - and they don't come cheap. I won't bore everybody with a rant about publicists (I've learned alot about them and it's not all good!) but it's been an interesting experience! Nothing like having a photographer rifle through your kitchen cupboards without asking permission, looking for props he can use in a kooky shot. Uggh. When I first started talking out loud about extempore, before it was very far advanced at all, somebody said to me, in a flippant sort of a way "What are you, some kind of masochist?" I can't get that out of my head :-) It's been interesting watching the assumptions. They're mostly along the following lines: Miriam has alot of money, or she wouldn't do this. - Nope. I had just enough to get myself into trouble. Relying on sales, subscriptions, advertising and a little bit of funding to get me through. The sales and subscriptions are much slower than expected. Everybody loves it. Few want to fork out $27.50 for it. Hmmm. Miriam does this full time - Nope. She has day job. Part time. A job that's just been cut from four days to three. Ooops! She may be back at her old tricks soon doing a dishwashing job to make ends meet! A team of people create extempore. - Nope. MZ is the captain of this ship. Editors are hired and paid on an hourly rate, on a consultancy basis. They work in their own homes and we communicate by email. The designer is a consultant also. Miriam is the editor, subscriptions manager, accountant, administrator etc. etc. Every email is answered by her. She calls the bookshops, and negotiates with the contributors, answers reader emails, applies for funding, seeks advertisers, solves problems daily. She's hearing alot less live music than she'd like because the startup of something like this is always labour-intensive, and she can't afford to hire someone to help her. Not whingeing. Just wanted to clarify. I am absolutely loving the experience and I knew that money concerns would be the flavour of the first couple of years. Support from among musicians has floored me. I knew that some muso's would like it, but the genuinely enthusiastic and across-the-board response from that quarter has been a surprise. It's made me feel all validated 'n stuff. Awww, thanks... If you're thinking that someone in your life might benefit from reading extempore, please either point them at it, or buy them one. If you're strapped for cash, talk to me. I am very good at offering a 20% discount, and more important than anything is to get this thing out there and being read, because anybody who reads it seems to like it... and talk about it... and that's the only way it's going to go anywhere. I'm being very very generous with the first issue (as some of you already know). Take advantage of that, and you'll be helping extempore survive. I'm doing this because I think it's important (and I've always wanted to do something like this) so I'll keep it going... don't you worry... And if If youse all think it's something you'd like to see hang around for a while, please continue to do what you can to get the word out !! Hugs and kisses Miriam www.extempore.com.au

I'll agree with you about publicists - they're a power for good and evil, just watch Absolute Power...
Keep up the good work Miriam.
