I seem to recall Kenny Weir having a go at the editors of The Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD about their treatment of Aussie recordings : either overlooking ones they shouldn't have, or damning with faint praise the ones they did include.
Seems like his criticism struck a nerve : I had a browse through the 9th edition today, and as far as I can tell, they've excluded Australian recordings altogether!
Nock, Grabowsky, Morrison, Chindamo, Barlow, Keller, Barnard, Isaacs, Tinkler....not there. Not even The Necks! Truly bizarre.
(I'll admit I was browsing in a bookshop, so maybe there are some Aussies in there that I didn't think to check for).

They left out a lot. Namibian jazz is completely ignored, Bangladeshi jazz is totally overlooked as is anything from the Congo. And don't get me started on the Pacific Islands! I say time to bring in the UN.

Even though it might be irrelevant, the eighth edition featured some very positive reviews for some of the artists AJ mentions.
Grabowsky, Chindamo, Oehlers immediately come to mind. If I remember correctly, a few artists from (the) Rufus and Jazzhead (roster) are also mentioned.
But I am curious to know. Have any of the artists (that AJ mentions) tried to get into the 9th edition?

I think with the 9th edition they purposely left out heaps of stuff from previous editions to include new stuff (not that there weren't new oz jazz albums...) without expanding the size of the book too much. One of the authors died recently (can't remember which one) so it'll be interesting to see if it goes to a 10th edition.

So far as I'm aware, it isn't up to the artist to get in, or lobby to be included ; it's solely a matter for the editors' discretion.

I've spent many pain staking hours trying to lobby the Penguin guide, it's a most disappointing result for me indeed. Though if you look at the bright side, with global warming and all there wont be many penguins left to buy Jazz albums as they'll all be fucked. The global crash has probably eaten up their savings too, so spending on entertainment will be less. I think the logical thing to do is to start a new guide to an animal that may have more future. Sea Gulls and Pigeons seem to be doing really well. No point looking at Whales or the Tassie Devil, all on the way out. There is heaps more poofters nowadays. Maybe a poofters guide to Jazz on CD, na, the book would be too big, so much saxophone. They do have money though. I know, how about an Artistic Directors guide to Jazz on CD, shit, they don't buy CD's they get em for nicks. This is harder than Uncle Johns cock this one.

I agree a lot of Australian jazz greats have been left out. No Deni Hines, Grace Knight, Paulini, David Campbell, the list goes on...

I wonder how many copies they sell in Australia?

I wonder how many copies they sell in Australia? Not many, I'm guessing. But there are people who buy it & read it worldwide, who treat it as a reference book, almost the Definitive Judgement. They would get the impression there IS no jazz scene in Australia.

Yeah, this is a joke. Oft times I admired their dedication and efforts at being a truly universal guide, and much more credible and enjoyable than the alternatives. But it was always an impossible task and now they seem to have given up entirely. Mind you, "they" is wrong, too, as one of the authors karked it. And that may have something to do with the shrinking coverage. It's just a piece of a bigger picture that has gazillions of people who live in the bottom of the world profoundly ignorant and/or dismissive of those (us) who happen to live in the top half.
kenny penguin, happily blissfully unemployed and pondering a future as a top-dollar-earning trumpet-playing golf pro and conno sewer of western suburbs ethnic cheap eats of he funky variety. Should be a breeze ...
