why is this topic a topic? What does an individuals sexual persuasion have to do with anything other than their own business? What is the point in finding out hopw many gay jazz musicians there are? I don't get it. I would assume that the balance is pretty much the same as any other part of society, but really, who cares? Jazz exists in a social environment, like all artforms. I'm unsure why discussion of that social environment would not be considered legitimate. Will anyone seriously contend that sexual orientation is not an element in artistic expression? Any university graduate with a major in Gender Studies would beg to differ. What is the point in finding out how many gay jazz musicians there are? I don't intend to do a survey. I'm only asking it on this forum, which exists for discussion of matters pertaining to jazz. If it were ascertained that there is a different proportion of gay practitioners in jazz compared to other artforms, that may indeed tell us something significant about jazz. Or is jazz just about chords and scales? Good lord! Of course jazz is about more than chords and scales but I don't think - and I suspect you don't either, that it is about who somebody is or is not rooting. Obviously one's inner feelings are factors in artistic output but do you really think it makes a difference which gender an individual is attracted to? Do you think (for example) that Tony Williams would have played any differently if he were attracted to women?

No, I don't think there is an identifiably hetero or homo way of playing, and I don't intend to comment on specific persons, but sexuality is so intrinsic to our identities as human beings, I can't see how a person's sexual orientation could NOT have a role in every aspect of the course of their life. Artists are no exception. Musicians are no exception. Jazz musicians are no exception.

Slightly off topic, but I've just been watching footage of a prawn running on a treadmill, to the accompaniment of the Benny Hill theme.

Utensils given the nature of this topic you should have started your post off as a new topic.

Utensils given the nature of this topic you should have started your post off as a new topic. Yeah I was just browsing the thread and suddenly I saw this box at the bottom of the page that said Quick Reply and that's all I could think of to talk about on the spot.

And there we have it, ladies and gentlemen - the nadir of online jazz discussion in this country: antsy folk getting wound up about sexuality, and a prawn on a treadmill.
