Very impressive program.......the only problem will be deciding which gigs to catch, at the expense of some other tempting gigs.

Am I the only one disturbed by the MIJF hosting the "Festival within a Festival" on the same afternoon as Big Arse Sunday? I hope this is just unfortunate coincidence, not something more sinister.
I heard that the Fringe folk are now changing BAS to the Saturday.

It IS an unfortunate clash, but I expect it's more to do with a lack of communication than anything more sinister. It's great that MIJF is including such adventurous stuff in their program, but let's hope that BAS can still survive.

it's unbelievable that MIJF just happened to have the same idea as Big Arse Sunday then accidently put it on the same day... go figure! so much for the idea of 'community' and cooperation that the new team at MIJF was supposed to bring with it ...and the people organising MIJF are getting paid!!

I hope that this is just an unfortunate clash. It would be a great shame if there were anything more to it. As A Noid alluded to, the ideas of community and cooperation are so important in a small scene like ours.
I agree with aj that it is good to see the MIJF trying some different ideas, but this is perhaps a little too familiar.
On another note, is the full Fringe program out yet?

oh right 'Yes' so you're blaming the fringe!! i'm going to have to change my name to A Fucking Noid!! Big Arse has been going for three or four years now and it has rocked every year ...such a good idea I guess it's too good to pass up but of course someone from the fringe should ring the festival just 'to let them know it's on.... i know the fringe dates have been on the web for ages now and the last sunday has always been big arse piss poor effort MIJF and double piss for form 'Yes' for blaming the fringe

is there a reason that 3 jazz festivals occur at pretty much the same time, in the same city, with no apparent interaction on any level? Wouldn't a pooling of minds and resources be a better way to go? Perhaps it could all be 1 megafestival? Shared marketing, administration, budget etc. You could still have sub-committees to ensure the integrity of each component (international, Australian, fringe). To the best of my knowledge even New York doesn't try to host 3 major jazz festivals at the same time! Call me crazy......

To the best of my knowledge even New York doesn't try to host 3 major jazz festivals at the same time! Call me crazy...... You're crazy! I can only speak for Stonnington Jazz. Our event is on in May because that is the only workable timeframe with regard to Stonnington's schedule of events, and the availability of the key venues (Malvern Town Hall & Chapel Off Chapel). We have communicated regularly with the folks at Fringe & MIJF to minimise the risk of 2 events booking the same acts, or getting into a bidding war for their services. In an ideal world, yes, there would be more of a gap between the 3 events (although, by definition, a 'fringe' festival is usually adjacent to the relevant major festival). But it is possible to have a workable differentiation between the events in terms of artists, venues and target audience/s.
