Out of interest, what are the successful forerunners you mention? Yeah - I'm interested in this, too. When I get back to work this week, I'll make some inquiries. I think Newport has had some sibblings somewhere along the way, and maybe New Orleans, too, although something tells me they were more of a promotional thing than a festival proper.

Here's what one of my JC pals posted in reply to my query:
"The North Sea Festival does one in Cape Town.
For a long time there was a Detroit-Montreux connection, and it was called the Ford-Montreux festival.
I think the Umbria-Melbourne connection could be good for getting Australian artists on the European festival circuit. Since North Sea started the Cape Town festival they've been booking a lot of South African artists for the main festival in Holland. Beyond that, I can't really offer any insights.
My problem with the Umbria Festival specifically is that they are very narrowly focused on straight-ahead, mostly American big-name artists."

I agree Kenny and that makes me doubt that it will help the Aussie acts much BUT I hope Im proved very wrong!
