I am calling on all Australian musicians and fans thereof to gather in Federation Square next week and burn their invitations to the Oscars in protest!
Films. I do love them, yet, I feel increasingly frustrated with the long list of credits at the end of the film. (You have heard me complain about this OJFers before, but tough! )
Have you ever loved a particular musical piece in a film and simply had to know the artist? Then you hang on through the credits, noting with respect of course, that Joe Bloggs was assistant designer of Ms Theron's handbags and Mr Kafoops was PA to the gaffer, while Jane Doe was Best Boy and let's not forget the electricians, carpenters and caterers. Credit where it's due, sure.
You wait and wait and finally you get a list of song titles, written by___ recorded by ____ on ? ? 2001 /___ err. they flash by so past you can't read them. Never mind the musicians who performed the original score, unless it is an orchestra, but does anyone know the name of the cellists?
Movies without music - unthinkable. As important as the art direction, acting, script and direction. Yet the credit given to the bulk of the artists who write and perform most of the music is not valued.
This applies to TV shows too. So I'm not going to the Logies either.
And in case anyone wants to know - all the musicians performing the music used in my films are credited - except for advertisements natch.
Anyone who wants to join me in this protest please let me know.

Oi KW worried you might miss out on the free booze? You again! I meant Nah! to the protest. Actually, I'm right into the movie/music nexus, and even got right into the whole musical schtick - in the days when I was on the "red carpet list". But the Oscars? Blech! I like OLD movies. Contemporary flix are just plain awful - especially the US variety: Thriller, action, comedy, chick flick, romantric comedy, horror, scifi whatever, they all look, smell, sound the same to me.

Best in Show The Man Who Wasn't There The Mighty Wind Mystic River The Monsters Ball Pulp Fiction Ed Wood The Adams Family Monster Pirates of the Caribbean Oh Brother Where Art Thou
just to name a few I reckon you oughta get with the program Weir. Making generalistions about an entire countrys cinematic output is a bit like saying all jazz is good innit?
ANd loads of these titles above had really great music.

This tragic movie devastated me and yet it is brilliant. And it's American KW
House of Sand and Fog
Ben Kingsley and a wonderful Iranian actress whose name I cannot spell

Ben Kingsley is a genius - did you see him in Fat Bastard? (A UK movie) but brilliant.
And music and movies: The Pianist - a brilliant movie. But I don;t think you can count it as a yanky one.

dos that mean u didnt get invited KW or u just dont care that the music artists get relegated to third banana status? *Never been invited to an Oscars bash; in my eight years or so as Entertinment Editor of the SHS, we overwhelmingly put the accent on music. Which is why I'm no longer Entertainment Editor of the SHS. *Credit should go where it's due, although this issue misses my radar completely due to previously mentioned hostility to contemporary film. Blech!

I have, finally, a DVD player - but only so Benny can watch the likes of Bugs Bunny or Scooby Doo.

Bugs Bunny: great music! I think Horowitz even got in there at some point, or a parody ofhim anyway.
Scooby Doo: I just couldn't stand the dog so I can't say. Glad to see you are spending quality time with your boy, Kenny.
My kids love Square Pants Spongeboard or something like that, YUCK! I bought them some older cartoons with good music but Squarepants is the fave at the mo.
