there is one passable place to eat but the service is too slow between gigs. AJ we've seen you at the KFC next to the Gateway. Your secret is out.

Actually, this is a fit topic for further, slightly more serious discussion.
The problem seem to me a tricky one: Basically everywhere is too crowded, especially in the dinner "window" between about 5pm and 8pm.
At the same time, as it is only one weekend a year, we can hardly expect small businesses to invest in extra facilities that may lay idle for the rest of the year.
I like the meat, bread and dips at the kebab joint, but the salads are awful.
The noodle joint is merely OK.
I haven't tried the Thai joint. Or the Chinese places.
Tips please!

you can cut the oil down if you take the skin off and the meat should still be moist if you use maryland. And you are 100 per cent spot on about carmelising the paste, vital. But really Kenny you should be roasting your own spices and pounding them with a mortar and pestle but given you are doing your show again, we'll let you use curry paste.

I also recall back in 1990, I sent my brother out to get my a coffee ; he returned looking dazed & horrified.......apparently the girl at the pizza place assured him they made 'real' espresso coffee, then added instant coffee to the filter before slotting it into the machine.
Things have improved in the coffee dept since then !!

they made 'real' espresso coffee, then added instant coffee to the filter before slotting it into the machine. It's completely unfair to expect any Australian town with a population of less than 50,000 to make 'real' expresso coffee! Maybe i'm just a coffee snob.

Yeah, well, I'm with AJ on this - generally speaking, I am able to secure good coffee.

Possibly my bitterness at the quality of coffee served in my town - ACT, found regularly at a bargain price of $3.50!

BTW, nothing wrong with being a coffee snob.
For a few years after I started writing jazz for the Sunday Herald Sun, I adamantly refused to go to Wangaratta on the grounds (ha ha) that the coffee was bound to be shithouse - as I explained to AJ at some length.
Then, one day, I received in the mail - anonymously - a newspaper clipping proclaiming that some Wangaratta barrista had won a contest as the best coffee-maker in Victoria or wherever.
As I say, I've had few problems in recent years, although quality can be variable.
And actually, in a wider sense, I rather like the Wangaratta vibe which makes it so pleasurable to concentrate on fuck all except the music.

I got this from last Sunday's Age, and tweaked it a bit. Sometimes the basil side of dinkum pesto is bit much perfume-wise, so this went down a treat with Bennie and me. And, given my music listening of late, the psychedelic green was most appropriate.
[glow=green,2,300]ROCKET PESTO[/glow]
couple handfuls long-leaf parsley ditto rocket 50 grams roasted cashews 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped parmesan virgin olive oil
Place all in whizzer and pour in enough oil so it blends properly.
Toss with short pasta and steamed green beans chopped to same length as pasta.
Music suggestion: John Martyn or Nick Drake.
