yeah, couldn't agree more. i was at both those gigs too. tinkler's bucket solo was excellent and jamie is sounding incredible. i also caught some of aaron choulai's group at bennetts which was nice (lovely writing) and a bit of the 15 year old italian alto player mmmm... not so sure about him, but fuck he's only 15. who was it that said 'we worship youth through a veil of tears'?

Actually I heard he is 17 but the PR spin is he is 15, Anyway I saw Cafiso with the Jazz Museum band and was knocked out by him. I can't wait until he is 35. Aging has it's advantages. I saw Lyall last night and was moved. There's the very big difference. go to www.jazz.org.au if you want to read what I wrote about that first opening night, more to follow. Shirley Bassey was an amazing singer, just really camp! It seems you can't be high camp and accepted as a great artist for some reason. Pity. Liberace was a first class pianist. Bassey can sing, and she doesn't even improvise. But I don't want any of her records. Judy Garland was totally amazing too and I don't want any of he records either, but I love watching her old TV shows on Ovation. Mel Torme did most of the arrangements too. blah blah blah

James Morrisons show did nothing to dispel my belief in him as a novelty act with chops. l certainly hope for his sake he never encounters a soulful note as the surprise might send him into heart failure. Joe Chindamo conversely showed great dignity putting up with J.M's nonsense and played superbly as always!

Saw Carlo interviewed in the local paper in Perugia. Asked how Umbria Jazz melbourne went, he replied, "Veni, vidi, vici".
