I'm sure there are plenty of other contenders ; but one that springs to mind is Grabowsky's 'Angel', sung by (& I believe with lyrics by) Shelley Scown.

How do you define a ballad? Does it have to have lyrics? My dictionary defines a ballad as a simple or sentimental song (esp. traditional) or narrative in short stanzas.
A lot of my favourite compositions by Australians are described as ballads by the composer themselves but they are talking about instrumental pieces. There are so many I would nominate here but the list would be too long and I'd worry I would leave someone out and then they would feel bad.
Never heard of a tune called "bleuch..." though! Who wrote that?
I once wrote a tune called: "It's a horrible day" - that was fairly 'bleuchistic'! I still play it when I am very pissed off. Maybe I could play it for Barry?

maybe we should substitute "the best" for "my favorite". thinking there is a best is plain silly.
whats your favorite Australian slow tune?
an Australian one doesn't come to mind, but, Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman is a perennial favorite for me. only some of the band play it very fast ... so that misses on two counts.
'Silence' is another by Charlie Haden, only misses on one count of un-australian-ness.
what's your favorite slow tune?

I'm with you belindablah, here's three favourites that come to mind quickly (no deep thinking): Bernie McGann - Mex (The Last Straw - The Last Straw) Bobby Gebert - Song For My Lady (Bernie McGann Quartet - Kindred Spirits) Sandy Evans - Feather Star (Clarion Fracture Zone - Blue Shift) PS VHB Monday night sounds great we were thinking along the same lines. Hey VHB - could you post the lyrics here for "you never make lasagne for one" .. is that a slow one? Belinda Moody - How can you OUT me over that tune. I'll get you for that one! For anyone who is at ALL interested "I never make Lasagna just for one" was a song written by myself and another far better musician than myself in an attempt to write the world's worst song. We succeeded in convincing Polydor to give us one thousand pounds to make a demo of it. Which was a lot of dosh back in the early eighties. The worst thing about that tune was how many people LIKED it.! And no, I shall NOT post the lyrics here or anywhere else. Unless you pay me lots of money first Ms Moody! Can't believe I even told you about that one.
