I think the Herald Sun is a shit and annoying newspaper. Thats why I choose not to buy it. Why would I waste my time reading it and then write a letter to the editor to tell everyone that I bought it, read it anyway, despite my better judgement, and find it still to be a shit-boring, annoying newspaper. What a waste of time. Its hard to avoid seeing the Herald Sun while sitting on a peak hour train, just like its hard to avoid spotting the TIGER while in his lair. Those of you who are sick of hearing about the TIGER should start your own thread about something else, something you find interesting, instead of adding to the general girth of a thread you say you despise. You make me wanna rrrRETCH!!! Hey Chaplin! I thought you chose not to play at Bennetts a long time ago for reasons of pride and integrity! (and so you didn't have to risk a jail sentence for involuntary man slaughter) Whats with this "I can't get a gig" thread? What a load of BOLLOCKS! Is it the War on Errorism thats making you all so Patriotic and Xenphobic? Or is it just a bad case of that sickly, despicable, contagious modern day Aussie disease "Howarditis"? Don't forget people, not all seppos are Bush's or Dick's or Rummy's. Theres the lovely ones we admire and get along with. Like that boy we deported for "looking like he might think about saying something a bit provocative". Anyway, the Tiger's born and bred at home you fools. My point was, if you don't want to see any tigers....stay out of the long grass.
PS: two best words on this forum all year:
Mark!
Simmonds!!
If I could paraphrase something Mark might have said at this point : "I'm the only one of you that doesn't seriously suck." You should all go home and do some practise.
ps: I heard the Tigers playing at 303 this wednesday.
PPS: I am so sick of people posting under their real names. Use your imagination people.

Did I mention the Sunday HS? No. Did I mention Kenny? No. I like Kenny! Yes! We like Kenny! Hi Kenny I used to date a girl called Onya when I was in High School. Any relation Tahina? She was Danish. You sound more Turkish! Where's Chaplin? I wanna fight him. Come on Chappers. I'll glass y arse. For what its worth....I think Tigers really a pussy. When he was at my crib in nu York man he wasn't doin no prowling. Just rubbing up against strangers legs. I suspect he also pissed on my couch. The place smelt terrible for days after he left! Tiger doesn't growl like a lion. He purrs and meows like a little kitty Kat. "I didn't win the best costume award. BooHooHoo. I'm so pissed off." Watch out next time you put your horn away after the gig. Tigger may be sleeping in your case!

Well, that just proves my point. Thats point 7b)sub-section c: Some people just shouldn't post under their real names. It'd just take you too damn long Tahina Pommegranite Saida Pide Fatima Blu Rondo Senem Selah Al Bint Onyabredrol. Which brings up another thought thats been bugging me for quite a while. Does anyone know if Mark Issacs is real? It just sounds like such a made up sort of name! No. Really! Mark Simmonds! Now theres a real name. Hi Mark Where in heaven or hell are you? When will you return triumphantly to save our wretched solos.

Dear present, MS may not be here, and he may not return, in fact I would say almost defitnitely never. And that makes all of us all the poorer for he is (not was!) ...IS without a doubt the greatest tenor player ever to set foot and blow breath through the horn on this continent. He is my inspiration, my light, my mentor and my friend. He may not be here to kick your arse but he definitely is not "gone" as you so in-eloquontely put it you shmuck. And no, I don't give a rats arse how eloquently is spelt, in the same way that if I was saying this to you in person I wouldn't be overly concerned that I was spitting in your face every third word!@!!$%#!^@@$*%
I wish there was a Mark Simmonds Foundation! There should be. "gotta move on"! you sound like one of those cops that would have the shit absolutely pummelled out of him if he wasn't in uniform.
Im not waiting in vain. I was there watching Mark blow down the walls and play like someone who REALLY CARED before everyone in this town became so conservative and proper and SO STUPID, UNIMAGINATIVE AND BORING! You, "present" are a dead weight. See, this is what I was talking about when I started this thread. Your like the guy on the train who reads the paper over my shoulder, while breathing his ugly, loud, smelly, bad breath in my face and TskTsk'ing occasionally at the article, then pretending you haven't been doing it when I look at you questioningly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. YOU HAVE ADDED NOTHING TO THIS THREAD except negativity and pessimism, and an opportunity for me to vent my pre-naughties rage. MAN! people used to care passionately about things. Millions of people around the world marched against the war in Iraq, then we just went to war anyway! So you get a student protest against fee increases....and only 40 kids turn up cause their either too scared of the repurcussions cause they're already spending so much for "Half an Education", or they look around the world and figure that it doesn't matter what people think, or how much you protest, the powers that be are just going to go ahead and do what they want regardless.
So we've passed the Age of Aquarius and entered the Age of Apathy! And thats why I hate these apathetic, dull, uninspired kind of comments that add nothing positive or even provocative.
I'm with Mr Patient. Damn straight. Not much else going on. I mean, yeah, theres some good musicians around, but how many of them have scared the shit out of you lately, or changed your life ? Many players these days are impressive, but none make my hands shake like the first time I saw Mark Simmonds at the St Kilda Bowling Club with Niko, Stinkler, Magnutson, Bekker & Snape.
Except.....maybe.....sometimes..........Tony Buck.

I drive a merc so I wouldnt know what its like on the train dear .. and then you say im pessimistic and negative! hmmnnn..please reread your last ditty and then stare at yourself in the mirror..good..notice anything chief dark cloud? see, im trying to help you HEAR whats going on today instead of living in the past like a fricken beatles diehard or something..OR a col-Train Fan ok..but for fucks sake.. Train wasnt properly recognised in his...Mark Wasnt recognised in his day, Bach wasnt recognised in his day... because people like you dolt were too busy thinking about someone who came before them! so get OFF this computer now bitch and get to Lebowskis of Bennetts or somewhere that ANOTHER great player isnt being recognised and THIS time, try to hear the truth IN THE moment instead of boring everyone who reads this to tears with your half cut bile/spleen... come on...thats right...arrive in 2005 and smell the coffee..its ok...you are what you are now..you wont be anything else..sorry...

sounds like fun, can I join in? ? OK, I'll go anyhow. I'm in both camps here and I dare say so is Glass your arse. For me MS is a constant inspiration, mind you I spent almost 5 years working with him so for me its not just a reflection of some distant creature I have no relevance to. His passion and music (both written and improvised) is something I aspire to. Now this is not to say that I hang by a thread waiting for him to have a second coming, though that would rock my world if it happened. I do however think that MS is part of the Ausy history more people should hear/study, just like Jamie Feilding, Lois Burdett, Roger Frampton, Phil Trelour and many other under-recognised Ausy heavies( and I mean HEAVIES). The more times any of their names are mentioned in whatever context the better we are for it in my view. Sure we need to be actively checking out the scene as it is right now, fuck I'm a part of it so I expect that from others, but its great to know whats been too and learn some shit from it. I have to say this too, MS is the most awe inspiring musician I seen or worked with anywhere, to me that even includes Shorter! Now I'm not saying who's 'better' its just what works for me. My musical life was changed by this man and I love him for what he showed me and that he took many hours of his time to do so. Still I'll be out whenever I can checking out whoever I can and I'll be doing it with both you cunt's so lets have a beer and a bitch.

nicely put stinky, I'II go with most of that also...in particular: the more times Mark Simmonds is mentioned in terms of a major musical addition to original contemporary australian music, the better, as apposed to the boring stories one hears often by people who never even knew him...
"And I'm pretty much there also for Mark Simmonds is the most awe inspiring musician I seen or worked with anywhere, to me that even includes Givan Goser! Now I'm not saying who's 'better' its just what works for me. My musical life was changed by this man and I love him for what he showed me and that he took many hours of his time to do so..."
Me too, many a lesson were learnt and I am continually dealing with many techniques, ideas, concepts, sound issues that I got a glimpse of in the short time I worked with him... To me one of his biggest strengths, he had a really "whole view" of the kind of music he played, technique, history, etc...but a concept for HOW he wanted to sound, and HOW he wanted the band to sound, it was clear, it wasn't just: "you do that, I do this, piano does this etc..." Many musicians can play their instruments, sure...but who cares when there is no sound or concept for how the music is meant to sound. to me most of the times it's just notes,
also for me the list goes on: interaction: ( yeah, not I play da da, drums answer da da, but a level of interaction that covered the obvious ( rhythmic, harmonic etc ), but also the more subtle detailed moods of the composition, feeling, intensity, diagonal interactions... sound: killer, so strong concept for band(s): this guy covered a lot of ground, and it was usually really clear concepts, rhythmically: more sophisticated than nearly any musician or drummer I've ever met, I learnt more from him than 10000 drummers! open minded: he isn't a snob about music, and didn't talk about music that he didn't understand as a negative thing, never heard his talk about "free crap" or whatever, more often than not he knew the history better than the people doing it, BROAD MUSICAL TASTES that showed in his playing... also introduced me to a shitload of really great music: ronald shannon jackson & the decoding society debussy piano music john gilmore with sun ra the necks tubby hayes phil trelor
the list goes on, sorry to romantically rave, but he is so far the australian jazz musician that has really ( and I mean REALLY ) got me going! the list goes on...
