I bet I'm not alone in liking Jarrett's trio a lot but hardly ever playing the numerous recs of them I have. Why put up with that shit when there's so much great music and only 24 hours in a day?

I'm not about to apologise for what - from any intelligent point of view - is basically crap. But I love 'em anyway. And completely unrelated to my decision to stop going to gigs. Do you have anything to contribute to the issues of start times and break lengths? Or the disenfranchisement of large chunks of potential jazz audience? Or are you just gonna get smart-arse with the messenger?

Keep your shirt on!
And yes! When my last two CDs were launched, at Melba Hall and the VCA respectively, the start times were much earlier than elsewhere. Freehand was launched with a concert performance at Melba Hall, challenging both the start time and the environment issues you bewail. Nine Open Questions was launched early on a Friday evening in an attempt to draw people shortly after work, ahead of heading out to do other things. As it so happens I don't remember seeing you at either event.
When we launch Three Friends In Winter it will be at Bennetts Lane for the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, because I have found it takes more energy, time and money to organise alternative events than is reasonable given how hard it is to change people's habits. For whatever reason it has been impossible to get my trio on Bennetts Lane's own calendar, and it is still the best place for playing what we play and ensuring a certain amount of exposure.

Yar, Tim, I forgot about those gigs - were they around today, I'd make a special point of attending given my current feelings.
I had Andrea Keller on my show a couple of weeks ago and we talked about this, and as a parent she empathised with my unhappiness. And she also mentioned that the situation in Sydney is different. Which reminded me that when I went to see Mike Nock's pre-MIJF show up there, I turned up late - right at the end of the first set! Mark and other Sydney types, do Sydney shows generally start earlier than those in Melbourne?
Tim, whose habits do you find hard to change - punters, venues, players? All three? Doesn't Jarrett's moaning turn you off, or are you one of those lucky souls for whom it is no problem?

Mark and other Sydney types, do Sydney shows generally start earlier than those in Melbourne? Yep. Sound Lounge is 8:30pm start, 11pm finish. That's Friday and Saturday too (that's the other big difference, SIMA runs its gigs on nights where there is no work for 9 to 5ers the next day. MJC does the opposite. Other thing is no-one seems to take more than 30 minute breaks.

Jarrett's moaning seems a very small price to pay relative to the rewards of his piano playing. It's peculiar, and I shouldn't mind if he didn't do it, but I don't care that he does. It certainly isn't sufficient to turn me off.
Re the changing of habits: it seemed to me that it was difficult to draw people to unusual venues for improvised music. Granted I'm only talking about two one-off events, but I felt that since I'd put quite a bit of work into promoting them they might have done a little better attendance-wise. Of course, people might have hated the music and stayed away for that reason - how can I know? And it's not like no-one came. But Nine Openers has sold quite a number of copies so it couldn't be that unpopular.

Jarrett's moaning seems a very small price to pay relative to the rewards of his piano playing. Each to his own. For me it's much bigger than a small price. I admire and applaud your efforts to think alternatively gig-wise - and feel sad they didn't set the world alight. My personal circumstances have changed a lot since then; my radar is far more finely attuned to such issues these days. How about this: The Co-op should do gigs on Sunday afternoons, in winter at least.

Ha ha - those must've been the days when I was sticking my head in speaker bins at the Seaview Ballroom. Fuck the footy. Really, with the Socceroos on the march and greedy/nasty Demetriou playing silly buggers with Channel 9, fuck 'em. Horrible little provincial game. Blech!

aren't you a rugby league fan kenny? Yeah, well sort of. I'll take a look at any of the football codes, even AFL, but prefer league and union. But I feel a real spring in my step with the advent of the A-League (have been to two Victory games), entry into Asia and the World Cup. Soccer seems to have the closest thing in sport to the mercurial brilliance of jazz - and now, it seems, there's enough going on to really do some digging.
