Can I suggest that the forum, if it is to continue, change so that only real names be accepted?.....in the odd times I've looked in though there have been some extremely funny postings..especially when Ironguts was in form.....it seems that lately when I have looked the mud has been hurled...it's too easy in forums to hide behind the cloak of anonimity..
Jazz in Australia is marginal enough as it is without self imploding in its discourse....
Completely diverging opinions and taste are the hallmark of a healthy culture...even more so the ability to express it with intelligence and courtesy.

I can see the benefits of using real names, though I am not a fan overall. I'm happy to use my own, name (or an alteration of it!) but I don't feel it should be a requirement. I think it would be an overeaction to a problem that has gotten out of hand for no reason. If people were required to use there real names they might be less likely to speak out against more highly regarded people (such as yourself mal, frank, mark, etc.). Such a problem would largely defeat the purpose of a forum like this; nothing is less compelling than a conversation in which everyone just agrees with everyone else. Forums and bulletin boards like this one depend on some form of anonymity to function, though I accept that they often malfunction as a result of anonymity also. The best way to deal with the problem ozjazz is having right now is simply to take the high road. If you can't take criticism, don't post anything that can bring criticism. If someone disagrees with something you say and you can't back up your argument, accept it and move on! Don't sit in the corner and sulk! Trolls are an inevitable byproduct of forums. When they spout their ridiculous rubbish, don't take the bait! Ignore them! Eventually they'll get so pissed off they'll post something so outrageous it'll get them banned. (If all else fails come join alimcg and I at the new MJO forum, it's a little lonely! www.melbournejazzorchestra.com/forum)

People should be proud of who they are and not feel inclined to hide behind their 'puters.
Id rather not use my real name. Im known by far more people as my user name anyhow. It keeps the line between pleasure and business quite specific. My real name is strictly for my very close friends. If you cant post what youd say in real life, then youre just 'yella' .. as whatshisfamouscowboyname would say. Some famous cowboy.. gun toting type dude..

And self-contradictory, as she has posted her real name on several occasions.

I would vote for a situation where the real name is at the very least mandatory information for the moderator. That way you can retain some mystery but still have to be accountable.

I have another suggestion: why shouldn't the forum outlaw real names? Only pseudonyms should be permitted. As Mal rightly points out, the best and funniest posts have been from anonymous contributors, and they have only lost their spark when we've found out who that person is. The real trouble only starts when you've got real people going at each other - it only seems like everything is disintegrating at the seams when we know who the contributors really are. The rest of the time it's just slightly dangerous fun. Bad as they sometimes were, things never got this appalling back when most people were guests, and it was de riguer to post under a made up name. So: outlaw real names. We could follow Ladylex's slightly bizarre example and save our real names only for our very closest friends (of which she seems to have few around here, so I'll expect her instant agreement). Or, plan B, follow the more entertaining Weir method of compulsorily changing names every week or so, just to keep the folks guessing... There's just not enough anonymity around here any more.

First Mim: those posts of my real name was to alert particular musos eg Nil Phoy ;D who I was. Hell.. whatever. I can do what I like! LOL People should be proud of who they are and not feel inclined to hide behind their 'puters.
Id rather not use my real name. Isn't that a little hypocritical lex?? Nup. Lady Lex Productions is my business name - and people in the know, know who Lady Lex is. Im proud of Lady Lex Productions. Im exceedingly proud of everything Lady Lex stands for. Its easy to find out who I am - google is your friend TBH: I hate my real name. It was picked for me by my granpa cos he thought naming me after his rich uncle's daughter would get him loads of money. So.. thats why I hate my real name. But then, people Ive come to know over the course of the last decade may not know who I am now. Getting married and changing one's name does that to a person. I dont hide behind my puter. Hardly. What I write here, is exactly what I say to your face. If you cant handle honesty, go cry into your momma's apron! LOL Anyway.. since this is ALL about me .. LOL
