For all of you who have ever bemoaned the lack of playing opportunities in Melbourne, the Scarlette Bar Jam session has started running again. Tomorrow night (Monday the 31st) special guest house band Willow Neilson, Mark Fitzgibbon, Aaron McCoullough, and The Captain. (filling in for Ronny Ferella's group) All are welcome...even singers, male or female... ;D
Anybody anonymously dissing fellow players on this forum should 'bring it to the bandstand' as they say, and I'll personally judge who is 'third rate' (or second or first for that matter) ;D

sorry to be off topic, but was doing a rehearsal recently where the conductor type leader guy was counting off a big band like this ...
... 2... 2... 2... go
or alternatively
1, 2, 1...
lovely guy though.

glen, not a chance it was you! anyways, i wasn't put out by it, it was just different and quirky!
p.s. captain I don't even know stable mates in Db. But a colleague was telling me about a jam in New York once that he went to. You were only allowed to keep playing if you could cut any tune that the regular sax player called. In any key. Otherwise, nup.
Hardcore.
p.p.s. I may or may not have decided to actually learn stablemates now.

a friend and i were discussing how fun it would be to go to a jam and say (with appropriate swagger and mystique)
... "yo, you guys know rugrats in Ab...?"
or
... "raggy dolls, 1 , 2, 1, 2, 3, 4"....

It was good Mim, apart from the lack of peoples of South Australian descent. I especially liked the bit when Dave Douglas didn't play ;D
Seriously though I 've certainly played at, and hosted, much less pleasant evenings.
Apologies to those bassplayers who sat in and had to deal with my atrocious gear.

What about drummers who sat in and had to put up with your atrocious electric playing?
