I think you took a couple of my points the wrong way there trumpetguy. My point is that when there is more competition (whether it's a measurable thing or not), we see better results (product?) at the end. Sure, most of us are well motivated, but competition in various sectors sharpens that.
Now, as for your point on tertiary courses, sure you don't think "I gotta beat so-and-so" but if there are more applicants than places, then there is inherently competition.
I wasn't talking about white-anting people's gigs, but take the MJC for instance. Martin gets many more requests than he can offer gigs... whose he going to give the gig to? Who would Tortoni give a Friday night gig to - the band that brings in no punters?
Great music can be made without "competition", but it will probably be heard by no-one.
I'm really refering to competition in it's broader sense, not necessarily this idea of the Jazz Awards, or the ARIAs or the Bell Awards.
