I am torn with this thread cos there are loads of musos I want to nominate but I dont want them to think I that I think they are underated e.g.
I would saw Grabowsky is underrated and Phil Slater is underrated (and their egos won;t be affected by me putting them here) Felix Bloxom, James Greening, Matt Jodrell, Stinkler, Shaggaz, Alex Robson, Tim WIlson, Julian Wilson, Magnusson, The Necks, Antboy Michell Nicholle because they don't sell as many cds as pop artists so most jazz people are under rated in my opinion in terms of the world not noticing how wonderful they are. I've gone past five sorry.
OK I nominate every jazz artist in my CD collection and 95 % of the ones on Dig Jazz are included too they are all under rated cos apart from my jazz musician friends, all my other friends who dont play music would have maybe one or two of these recording in their house and HEAPS of pap instead. sad.
And I figured our Jazz is now the equivalent of the deal with the impressionist artists i.e. when the artist is no longer scraping by trying to pay for food and his kid to go to school and finally dead and buried in the paupers grave, then the world will suddenly go. "Shit there used to be all this AMAZING improvised jazz at the start of the new millenium played by all these brilliant Aussies Let's start marketing this music we call 'renaissance jazz' ".
And our great grankids will make a fortune from our work I hope they dont spend it on the equivalent of Kylie CDs. etc
So get your copyright and your estates sorted, or not. It is nice to dream.

So get your copyright and your estates sorted. no jazz musician anywhere sell as many cds as a pop musician and never will so save your strength and your nerves mate and forget about it. most of the musicians you mention are fairly high profile even if most don't make much money. The ones on my list I think get too little recognition within the scene. How many times has someone like Adam Ponting or Chuck yates or Anton Delecca played at Wang compared to the musicians on your list? That's what I really mean by under-rated. Ponting is quite brilliant but I heard he's a 'difficult' personality and mentally fragile. I used to hear him a bit at the Side-On Cafe jam sessions but only Roger Manins used him in a band.

mr noy... well, he has just blown me away everytime i have heard him play. he played great with his trio - beautifully melodic - great musical statements and interplay within the ensemble - he obviously has an excellent harmonic understanding - and I think he can wail in just about any style. with this funky new orleans band the other day, he played baritone - and he played it just as well as his alto - some of the best funk/jazz playing i've heard in ages. he's a humble and thoughtful musician who can play the saxophone the way it's supposed to be played! - and he is relatively unknown - so i think he is under-rated.
jon delaney... jon is a beautiful guitarist. he has a gorgeous tone (albeit often too soft!) and a great harmonic understanding. he's just a beautiful improviser and he is totally killer on ballads. i love listening to mr delaney play his own music.
very general, but hope that validates my noms. Gb

Both of them are just approaching or just over 30. Not so sure if Phil has recorded as a leader yet? He should. But Jon has just recorded 2 nights of gigs with his trio at the Paris Cat. Trio is with Tom Lee and Ronny Ferella. Seriously good music... Check out his website www.jondelaney.comOr even better, come along tomorrow night to the Paris Cat - I'll be playing with Jon in my group: Southside Hammond Clan. 9:30pm start...

Thanks GB, I'd love to but I'm back in Sydney for a few months. These guys sound interesting. They're a lot younger than Ken James and Chuck Yates but not all that much than Adam Ponting and Anton.
