Venturing down the Hume in May to hear, I'm sure some great music during the festival. Will be in town for a little while so I was wondering if any locals could put me on to some good new and second hand record/ CD stores. Nothing better than wondering through a good store finding that elusive disc you've been after for years. Any help will be gladly appreciated.

Where to start... how about just keep on heading south and go to Music Without Frontiers in Hobart. I went in there last week while in town on tour and was amazed by the stuff he had in there. Went back again too. Spent lots of money.
As for Melbourne, Basement Discs has its moments, if you like vinyl Northside Records is pretty good, though I haven't been there for ages, Blue Moon on Smith St has a lot of rubbish, but also a lot of great South American and Caribbean stuff. Apparently Discurio still exists, but I don't know where. There's a great jazz store on the Nepean H'way just after the junction. Kinda depends on what you're after really. If you want guts' new record, just go down to Vinnie's.

I can second that Music Without Frontiers in Hobart is a great store with heaps of albums that never pop up in any of the chain stores. I was down in Melbourne and Tassy at the beginning of the year and found way more CDs of interest in that shop than in all the shops I checked out in Melbourne.

When I was in Hobart last year I went repeatedly to Music Without Frontiers and bought heaps of stuff. Not only CDs but music DVDs. Very strong on classical as well as jazz. The guy who runs it is dry, eccentric, cynical and delightfully enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He admitted he doesn't have much Australian jazz though. The best Australian record store I've been in.

Discurio is in Hardware St, just above Lonsdale in the city. Worth a look. Max has some unusual CDs plus always a decent sale table.

Mark, surely it would be the Best record store you've been to in Australia? Especially given that he admitted to not having much Australian jazz.

I knew I'd left that a bit loose, good on you for spotting it Guts. Yes, best record store I've been to in Australia. Not necessarily best JAZZ record store (particularly as Oz jazz is under-represented) but best record store for non-mainstream music including jazz (and also including classical, world, musical theatre etc). Definitely not best Australian record store (does such an animal even exist?) if the adjective "Australian" is only applying to "record".

Can I just add, that on Thursday night (Good Friday eve) the only store LadyMcG and I found open in the whole Hobart CBD was Music Without Frontiers. Yes, I know it's Hobart, but I thought Thursday was late-night shopping. Picked up a couple of great African field recordings - one from Burkina Faso, the other of some East African Witchcraft and Ritual music.

Readings on Lygon St are actually pretty good for Australian jazz - especially as they're a book store. (Apostrophe used to denote an omitted letter)

Well, thanks for the replies, so far. Stuff Melbourne I'm off to Hobart. Thinking of bringing the surfboard with me anyway.

OK John, should I let out your room then? True St Kilda's surf is about as good as Hobart's live jazz scene (sorry Tassie no disrespect but...)

I suspect very, very few active members or supprters of the local jazz scene have been in Hound Dog's Bop Shop in West Melbourne. A disgrace, really. Touch yo roots.

Never knew it existed. What street is it in Kenny?
Hobart's live jazz scene was pretty good in the last week of March, Vicki - there were at least 3 gigs that week. Much better than St Kilda's surf.

Hound Dog's Bop Shop Records313 Victoria St West Melbourne 3003(03) 9329 5362 Thursday-Saturdays only. No jazz - or at least not what is commonly thought of as jazz. But massive oodling heaps of gospel and western swing and soul and R&B ( real R&B) and other stuff that was happily rubbing shoulders with jazz back in the day.

...just have to second all that about Music Without Frontiers.
Stephan (the guy who runs it) is a classic - I remember someone saying that he likes nothing better than red wine and argument.
...and Vicki, unfortunately you are right - the live jazz scene is non-existent.
