The vice chancellor of Melbourne Uni - recently posted a memo stating that 'future students' first pref' high school grads, were supporting the new model. There has probably been little change in interest for some courses including music - anyone thinking of studying music will keep their options open -but the official figures show that this years first pref figures are down 6% already across the uni.
It wont of course put a dent in the dogma that is being cultivated at Melbourne - but at least some kids are seeing through the haze of corporate rhetoric and the shameless advertising(sound familiar?)

This is a very complicated subject - with a lot of theories that are not quite true. For one there is a big difference between the Uni' and Tafe's- Universities teach students how to research.
More exciting news is the top 8 Australian universities have been negotiating with the government for music performance to be a research outcome (DEST'able). With the new RQF system starting next year there will now be financial and credibility rewards for performance research resulting in more money to the music departments.
To get a job at a continuing position at University these days you will need a least a Masters degree.
Most Universities will pay for a continuing lecturer to do a teaching /lecturing course (2 years)
Most Universities expect from continuing staff: 40% teaching 30% research 30% service (coordination - committees etc.)
Unfortunately, it is all the cuts (government) to the Uni's that is effecting the cutting back of sessional and continuing staff.
Let's hope that the political parties promises include more government funding to Universities.

Not quite true Ornette, I hear TAFES are now offering research degrees - a couple in melbourne have music degrees - Nick Haywood and Adrian Sherriff are running one of them - sounds pretty good.

I would think that the degree course at NMIT would be fantastic with Nick and Adrian - but the course is an industry based degree and that is their angle -
