Yamandu Costa on the other hand - wow. If only Albert Dadon hadn't stood right in front of me, completely blocking my view for so long. You get that with artistic directors.

I don't have much to add....saw both shows, McCoy's set on Friday was a disaster, the Saturday gig was better but still disappointing. The sound was awful on Friday, adequate the next night.
Clearly, his health is a problem ; it was sad to see. I had hoped he & Liebman could inspire each other, but they never really connected. I have no idea whether McCoy keeps playing & touring because he has to financially, or just doesn't want to stop.
Yamandu was great fun.
Pharoah was great to hear..you could quibble about a few aspects of his set, but when he unleashed that sound........wow ! He & Joe Geia sounded great together, too.
On a different note, the Chindamo-Grabowsky concert was thoroughly enjoyable !

Agreed.
I don't think any of them really connected.
Who won? ;D

It wasn't a race !
(And if it was, do you really think I'd be foolish enough to SAY who won ?)

I'd pay to see them doing laps of Fed Square. Hell, let's have a jazz lap-athon. I'll donate $10 to charity for every lap Paul does... as long as it's in his Wesley blazer.

I think there'd be a few here having trouble doing laps of that place, at least with out stopping at transit for a pint!

I have a bootleg of McCoy playing in 2006 with Josh Redman, Bob Hurst and Brian Blade. He is totally killing, good chops, strong rhythm, its all there. I can post it here if anyone wants a copy. Maybe he has good nights and shit nights. That rhythm section was pretty bad though.
The sound guy definitely had NO idea how to deal with the greatest left hand in post war Jazz. It was startling to hear that in the context of most contemporary pianists, most of whom seem to have forgotten that they have a left hand.

We've got left hands; it's just that they don't need to resemble the falling anvil in a Warner Brothers' cartoon.

- any discussion of left hands around here is going to be fraught with peril...

Come on Tim, do you hate McCoy's playing that much? You can't deny he introduced a whole pile of new harmonic concepts for comping and soloing. We know you don't play with that much left hand (or sustain pedal for that matter) but I'm pretty sure I've heard you play a 4th's voicing before...

I know a few pianists who have very active left hands - perhaps that's why they don't apply it to their piano playing - too tired!

Come on Tim, do you hate McCoy's playing that much? Well that's probably not so important. But between forgetting you have a left hand at all, and choosing to employ it with an appropriate subtlety, there's an ocean of difference. Anyway, who are all you people who address me so familiarly?

That's why i said most contemporary pianists... All present company excluded... I wasn't having a dig at Aussie pianists anyway, my generalization was mainly aimed at Northern folks. anyway fuck subtlety, I wanna hear some stride!
