I suggest this 1959 classic: Worked for me ... and certainly rocked harder (so to speak) than the Acca Dacca/Highway To Hell they were playing as I planted my extremely nervous, uptight behind in The Chair. God God almighty I've heard some crap at the dentist since it became acceptable/cool to have music playing while tooth ministrations are going on. And - until today - I've always forgotten to BYO. Pity the laughing gas was at the OTHER branch.

I refuse the music headphones - but I'm outing myself here on OJF. I LIKE going to the dentist. After many years in the UK going to an Australian dentists is a delight. Anything that gets me away from the clutches of my work enforced mobile phone for one hour or is a good thing. In fact, I get so relaxed I often fall asleep in the chair (did hypnosis therapy for years so just float off to the beach in my head). During a particularly stressful time at work, years back, when I was having all the UK dentistry ripped out and replaced at an exhorbitant costs I used to ask for longer appointments so I could stay there for a few hours at a time, but they wouldn't let me. Now that is a cruel dentist. Some people think I'm sick but not as sick as Jerry Koster's habit of throwing his underdaks at Agnetha. Love you JK.

Headphones? Shit - all i wuz talking about was the modest ghetto blaster they have in there. I have only one previous encounter wih laughing gas and music, At The Same Time. 'Twas about 20 years ago or more. I was living in London. This Kiwi dentist dude fronts up one night with a diver's bag, in which was this big tank and packet of balloons. We were already well into a doobie session, so this was just icing the cake. My foggy recollection is that Little Feat never sounded so good. I'm well past such recreational use of such things, but when it comes to dentist-initiated pain, I'll try just about anything.

DENTISTS Very funny: KW,we were clearly UK based at the same time, although my Brixton dentist never had music or any fun stuff either. BTW Being in the habit of using large amounts of the same silly recreational stuff that got you enjoying Little Feet, I can't recall if I ever shagged you? PK BABY Hey has PK had his baby yet - does anyone know? OJF 500th POST? We only HAVE two posts to the 500th- so shall it be: AJ with one of his clever one liners? An insiteful reflection by Mr Isaacs? Will Iron Guts come back? (He's in Melbourne now so he has no excuse) Will we hear from Penis Envy again? (No please!) Will Cartman rise from the dead? Will BM join us from Japan or LA or wherever she is? Papa Stevens maybe? KW picture desk? GB with a list of groovy CD's? Uncle Bob and his IT explorations? Or the Kiama goovers: John and Vicki? We'll have to wait and see. Taking bets NOW.

I lived there two years, roughly 77-79 I think. Have to check old passports to be sure. My head was at almost all times full of hash, the Grateful Dead and punk rock of various stripes, and my belly almost always full of real ale. No time for shagging. As far as I can recall.

Hoots Mon, Kenny! sadly I didnae shag yee then! I was hot too babe, cross between Kate Bush and Heddy Lamaar (& I have the pics to prove it). I arrived in the UK under Thatcher. Spent early days at the Nashville & Moonlight club watching: Joy Division, The Monochrome Set, Swell Maps, Scritti Politti. At home I played John Coltrane, Billy Holiday, James Brown and Lambert Hendricks and Ross too (I liked Jon Hendricks best). But HEY: I was only a teenager who'd been brought up on Jazz so I HAD to rebel - my parents were arty showbiz types for God's sake! Watch out! OJFers, this could happen to YOUR kids too! "Forget jazz Dad, bring on the Whitestripes!" Unless it is already happening, you poor things.

So I finally got 'round to completing my root canal therapy yesterday.
In the interim, my dentist J'en had acquired a nifty little TDK player with satellite speakers. He's got lousy music taste, but the unit sounded good. And he's happy to play it way above background level.
It's quite bizarre - when I was little, I couldn't have imagined being able to listen to Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers (Like Someone In Love) twice through while being dentisted.

Incredible sound. It's very much a west coast thing, though, so if that doesn't float your boat ... * Root canal: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Aheeee!
