Damn straight, this is hilarious! Bring on the noise - after listening to some of Yusuke's music, I want to hear him play Autumn Leaves too! Would be a damn sight more interesting than most attempts...
...and Vicki - 'Twangaratta' is sheer brilliance. Now get some sleep.

There's nothing wrong with being a "noise man" but thats all he can do. And I don't believe he should represent 10 of the best jazz guitarists under 35 in Australia.
After all, it is a "jazz" competition not a "noise" competition. And don't they have to play over a "Blues" for the audition? heaven forbid we have any reference to where this music came from.

Don't see what your problem is, sgee ; if there are 'better' guitarists (by your criteria) out there, maybe they didn't enter, or didn't send in a great entry. He's in the finals now, give him a fair go....he might surprise you.

I'm just disappointed that Cap isn't showcasing his impressive guitar talents in the comp.

great to see that the finalists aren't the '10 best Autumn Leaves players'... and isn't provocation of discussion one of the useful functions of competitions...? maybe the MOST useful function of competitions. Wouldn't be much to discuss if all the players sounded the same. I remember when Will Guthrie won Wang and it was controversial it seems cos he didn't play like Philly Joe Jones... seems like the judges choice then has been vindicated; he's certainly recognised now for the talents that his critics then couldn't see... I reckon Wang has a pretty good record with these comps...

In the early 80's I read an article by some European critic that suggested Bill Frisell was a "sonic artist" as opposed to a 'jazz' musician. What a bunch of crap.
Any 'jazz' player of significance is a sonic artist. Many of them made noises that at the time breached the protocols of sonic acceptabilty to the mainstream.
The mainstream of jazz guitar is inextricably tied up with sounds, effects, and technology - otherwise lets ignore everything after 1930...including Django and Charlie Christian.
The notion that notes ,chords and abstract notions of rhythm are somehow more important than any other element is a debate that has nothing to do with actual music making.
If the accepted notion of what jazz guitar is - is a jazz box with a small amp and woody sound -and there is an infinity of subtlety in that - then we can also write off Scoey and Frisell ,Muthspiel, Monder,Metheny, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Beautiful jazz is not always subtle.
Autumn leaves is a nice example of cyclic harmony and not a bad tune... but hardly an indicator of musical initiative and creativity.
I know there are a number of players who missed out on the finals despite being really good...lets keep it in perspective - when you have the words music and competition in the same sentence - actual music itself can become very elusive..
Maybe Yusuke should check out some tunes one day.....as it is he is a musician improvising coherently within the elements at his disposal.
Congrats to Mulls and Mags for chalking one up for diversity.

He's saving it for 08...year of the bass. aj - a golden opportunity has been missed to have a person win in consecutive years on two different instruments.
