National Jazz Awards Finalists Announced
19/9/07
Who are the best young guitarists in Australian jazz today ? You can hear ten of them in the finals of the National Jazz Awards, at the 2007 TAC Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz in November. (The Festival will run from Friday 2 - Monday 5 November).
Australia's most prestigious jazz competition, the National Jazz Awards feature a different instrument every year. Last year, it was piano. This year, it's guitar, for the first time since 2000, when the judges were unable to choose between Steve Magnusson and James Muller, who will return as judges for this year's finals (along with Sydney pianist Mike Nock).
The ten finalists were chosen from recorded entries submitted by musicians from across Australia, from Brisbane to Perth. Entry was restricted to musicians 35 years of age or younger (as at November 1). Entries were assessed on a blindfold basis by the judges.
The finalists are :
* David DeVries, 24, from Sydney
* Lance Ferguson, 34, from Melbourne
* Aaron Flower, 28, from Sydney
* Ben Hauptmann, 27, from Sydney
* Tim Jago, 23, from Perth
* Simon Jeans, 34, from Perth
* Nashua Lee, 30, from Melbourne
* Carl Morgan, 19, from Canberra
* Matt Smith, 22, from Lismore (NSW)
* Hugh Stuckey, 22, from Adelaide
(Ages shown are as at the 30th October 2007).
Chairman of the judging panel, Mike Nock, said, "There were some outstanding musicians among the entrants, and it's interesting that the ten finalists are drawn from right around the country, and represent quite a range in terms of age and experience. They also represent quite a diverse range of musical approaches, so their performances at Wangaratta should be very interesting."
The ten finalists will perform in the first round, with three then selected to play in the final round, which will be broadcast live-to-air on 'Jazztrack with Mal Stanley', on ABC Classic FM.
* The winner will receive $6000 ; plus a studio recording session for 'Jazztrack with Mal Stanley' on ABC Classic FM ; and an invitation to perform in the Stonnington Jazz concert series in May 2008
* The runner-up will receive $3000.
* The third finalist will receive a prize of $1500.
At Wangaratta, the finalists will play with bassist Sam Anning and drummer Ben Vanderwal.
