The Natives celebrate the launch of their debut album, Yma Jam Yma.
The Natives CD Launch – Yma Jam Yma
Thursday 21st February, 8pm.
Yarra Edge Theatre, NMIT Fairfield campus (Yarra Bend Rd, Fairfield).
$15/$10 concession. CD’s $20.
The group recorded with Mal Stanley for ABC’s Jazztrack program in September 2007 and are now releasing it; a refreshing and exciting Melbourne debut, Yma Jam Yma.
The Natives are an outlet for saxophonist Gideon Brazil's compositions and musical experiments. Formed in 2002 as a trio with guitar and drums, the group has over the years evolved into a sextet with piano, bass, drums and a three piece horn section. As its name suggests, The Natives music is preoccupied with groove and the melodic line. Compositionally The Natives draw influences from styles such as jazz, world, roots and free music, with more of an emphasis on organic group interaction rather than on the soloist.
With some of Melbourne’s finest improvisers, the group is: Gideon Brazil (saxophones/flute), Ed Fairlie (trumpet), Shannon Barnett (trombone), Darrin Archer (keyboards), Tamara Murphy (acoustic bass) and Ronny Ferella (drums).
The album is independently released and available exclusively from Title records (183 Gertrude St, Fitzroy) until sold out, or direct from Gideon... but not before the launch of course! Helen Gill is responsible for the beautiful artwork.
“On 'Atmoris', West's guitar wove subtle loops to form a kind of drone, merging with Brazil's understated saxophone lines and occasionally breaking off into more staccato asides. 'Turkey' rested on a hypnotic and appropriately Middle-Eastern figure, while 'Waiting Games' managed to coax odd time signatures into exuberant, syncopated grooves.” - J Nicholas, The Age
So, get down to NMIT Fairfield on Thursday 21st February, 8pm for a concert-style performance to celebrate the launch of the new CD and Gideon’s last gig before he goes away overseas for a year. There'll be complimentary wine and nibbles too. $15/$10 entry. CD's $20ea.
