I went to see Ornette Coleman last night at the Sydney Opera House. Sorry I'm not musical so I won't try & offer anything more than to say it was an absolutely sensational show. Ornette played virtually the whole time which I suppose he was compelled to do given that there was only him, his drummer son & three (count em) bass players.
The advertsing said that this band sound like no other around at the moment & I think thats pretty fair comment. Great to see a full house, full of Sydney's & Melbourne's finest jazz players in attendance.
Mark Atkins who opened on Didge' was also fantastic. A memorable night given that I don't anticipate too many more opportunites of seeing Ornette or someone of his stature playing. again.
I'd be interested to read what others thought.

I'm going to see him in Adelaide next week and have heard it was great last night. I'm looking forward to it needless to say, though I said it anyhow. Did anyone see the Bad Plus?

yep, I saw the Bad Plus - they were good, and the crowd of mostly uni aged blokes went absolutely nuts. Seemed like an unproportional response to me (they're obviously shitloads more famous than I thought they were - how do so many people know of these guys? were they in a movie? or is this just the usual basement crowd?). I hadn't heard any of their stuff before, and they sounded like a lot of other good modern piano trios. The drummer was (maybe over...)animated, which the crowd seemed to enjoy...
I was really hanging out for Ornette's gig, but it was unsatisfying to me until they played "Lonely Woman" as the encore. He sounded great and just like himself, but I didn't like the band (this is an entirely unproductive comment, but unfortunately that's how I felt) - I would have preferred to hear Ornette with just the double bass player. This doesn't really seem to agree with anyone else's opinion after the gig... I'm glad others enjoyed it, but I was disappointed.
the catholics were incredible. 2000 people should have been at their gig.

The Shaggs' drummer has it all over Denardo Coleman... but agree Ornette was amazing.
