I was talking last night with a very well respected Australian saxophonist about todays jazz saxophonists, in particular tenor players. He was basically saying that every tenor player sounds the same now....more than any other instrument. They've all got Trane stuff down, all got Brecker stuff, a little Rollins and some even a little Garbarek but essentially they are all souless clones. He was quite passionate about what he was saying and he had some good points. But why do people always forget Boots Randolph's influence on modern tenor players? Really annoys me.

That's rubbish. Its true on a very shallow level, but find me one guy who sounds as good as Coltrane?
It's extremely hard not to sound like yourself. There are a few freaky examples of people who can imitate perfectly but its pretty rare.

I'm with the cap, it's bollocks.
It's not even about sounding as good as Coltrane...it's about the fact that every player has an individual approach.
Jules Wilson, Willow Nielson, Anton Deleca, Gideon Brazil, Danny Healy, Andy Wilson, Jamie Oehlers, Andy Sugg, Phil Noy...the list is long....none of these guys sounds like Trane or Brecker. They have influences, but they still have their own thing going on.
Cam, it'd be great if you could expand on what was said.
I think people hear what they want to hear, and focus too much on similarities rather than celebrating the emergence of a voice.
Want to hear great tenor? Go hear Ned Goold when he's in town soon.

Its not even about an 'emergence of a voice' - It's just that even if you suck you still sound like no-one else. That's why Jazz is awesome, there's unlimited scope for personal sound.
You could sound very similar to your heroes but you'll never nail it.

I don't necessarily agree with him so don't place me in his basket....I'm a huge tenor fan.....it's just that Boots Randolph has done so much for the instrument and is definately part of the lineage of great tenor players.
PS....whoever wrote about Ned Goold.....that guy sucks. I heard him randomly at Bennetts about 5 years ago and it was one of the most boring gigs I've ever seen. See.....he's obviously not checked out enough Boots. It's like bass players who haven't copped any Danny Partridge.

I forgot about Dave Koz....thanks for reminding me.....he is killin'. I think his 3rd album "Heart To Heart" is definately some of his finest work. Another talent worthy of wider recognition is Boney James........he is heavy!!

Ive just had this great idea for a movie.... the enlightened people of the 25th century send a robot back in time to erase the entire legion of sad-ass smooth sax players.
