Heard this story told on The Music Show this morning.
The conductor Thomas Beecham was premiering a work by a certain British composer as part of a concert program. The composer arrived to the rehearsal late and after listening for a minute interrupted proceedings to say to Beecham "I would like you take it much faster".
Beecham stroked his beard and said: "Dear chap, I'm certainly willing to try it, but you do know that it's not your piece we're playing"
