I'll let it sit at that.
PS, Wynton sucks, even though he is possibly one of the best instrumentalists on the planet.

Hey Guts, Here is Keiths rave: Jarrett saves his most pointed attacks on the current jazz establishment for Marsalis. "Wynton imitates other people's styles too well," he says. "You can't learn to imitate everyone else without a real deficit. I've never heard anything Wynton played sound like it meant anything at all. Wynton has no voice and no presence. His music sounds like a talented high-school trumpet player to me. He plays things really, really, really badly that you cannot screw up unless you are a bad player. I've felt embarrassed listening to him, and I'm white. Behind his humble speech, there is an incredible arrogance. And for a great black player who talks about the blues - I've never heard Wynton play the blues convincingly, and I'd challenge him to a blues standoff any time. He's jazzy the same way someone who drives a BMW is sporty."

No worries Guts (whom I just watched playing with Lorna Luft on Spics and Specs...but no flugelhorn in sight...) There is such a wird vibe on these 2 tracks. It is like 2 different groups . Willie and his Harmonica player and Wyntons band (who play like they have had the heavy hand of Wynton 'instructing' them). With all of the money behind them, they could have at least got Willie to do some of his hundreds of original songs... try something new? My wife LOVES Willies 'Stardust' album where he does nearly all the same repertoire as on this album, and hasn't Wynton recorded and played Stardust enough times? (2 versions on "Live at The Vanguard" and another on "Hot House Flowers"). I am kind of sick of Wynton telling me how to play jazz actually. If an artist in 2008 is not free to express themselves drawing from a variety of 'styles', then whats the point? If in one set a band goes from a piece that has Wyntons required "Blues and Swing " to a piece that has no blues or swing, do they need to go on the mike and inform the Audience that they are changing styles now? Remember when Wynton made the point that jazz in Europe had made no contribution to Jazz? (on Grabba'a ABC show) Enough with these stringent little definitions. We live in the world, get over it,suck it all up and spit it all out! (what a rant...sorry)

Jarrett's being an ass (the animal not the American posterior) when he describes Wynton as sounding like "a talented high school trumpeter". No high school known on this particular planet anyway.

I recommend hearing 'Congo Square' as a much more satisfying recent musical event from Mr Marsalis. You can't get the album here but you can get the DVD. Very beautiful playing from Ghanaian singers and drummers playing with the LCJO. Very little 4/4 swing (for those who can't stand it) but lots of great rhythm and grooves.
