The first of November this year will see the release of a new Australian journal of Arts and Writing that is 'about, inspired by and responding to jazz and improvised music...'
Notice the spookily similar premise to the theme of this year's National Jazz Writing Competition? - that's because the idea comes from the same source as that initiative - Miriam Zolin.
extempore is bi-annual (May and November) and includes writing , art and photographs by people you'll be familiar with as well as new faces and voices. Each issue is accompanied by a bonus CD. The CD coming out with Issue 1 is a compilation of tracks from Kimnara Records.
We've got stimulating and thought-provoking essays, interviews, book reviews, short stories (this issue includes the winners of the National Jazz Writing Competition), poetry, prints and photographs.
NOT an academic or political journal, extempore is a celebration all the way jazz and improvised music are all around us and inspire creativity, as well as drawing inspiration from the work of those of us who write or paint.
I encourage the readers of this forum to look at the website, consider contributing, subscribing, signing up for the free newsletter and--most importantly--talking about extempore.
extempore is being funded from private resources at the moment, at some financial risk. We're brand new and we're doing a bit of work in the background to ensure that it hits the streets with a bit of a splash. We're committed to producing something that can stand proudly beside other Australian and international journals of arts and writing. Responses so far seem to indicate that we may have hit the mark! But I thought you'd all like to hear about it from me personally... And if any of the lurkers or posters here on this board think it's worth investing some of your positive energy--rest assured that your contribution, in whatever form it takes, will be gratefully received.
