I'll be shot for asking, but the Sunday Herald Sun designers (also known to many old sub-editors as artistes) have foisted upon the CD review format a requirement that we (ie reviewers) pick two names (musicians, not albums) to fill in at the end of our review as a guide to readers on what to expect. Nice idea, in theory. I'm reviewing Lost and Found's self-titled album, struggling as always to put music into words, and I'm a bit lost on where Oehlers, Grabowsky and Beck fall in the "file between" department. Any (vaguely serious) thoughts? I've stuck in Eric Dolphy (Kenny will like that 'cos he's dead), and that's where I'm stuck. Not too many sax/piano/drums line-ups come to mind, but maybe that may be my limitations showing. I've thought of Oliver Nelson and then gone to different instrumentation with, say, Paper Hat, Marc Hannaford (of the Forking Paths), Tinkler (going Backwards) or even Andrew Klippel's Orange Album (not really close). Idiotic suggestions welcome, but please make it fairly obvious. And I'll accept the criticism that reviewers should know more and do their own research. But in the interests of providing some sort of guide... Meanwhile, it's a great album and the review won't do it justice.

That's a hard one for sure, and I do like a hard one.
Would be nice to file it in relation to other Aussie stuff as it's more promotion for us, every bit helps. I've heard it and yes it's bloody great playing by all. If anything I'd say it might be along the line of some ECM stuff like Gnu high, cept it's all improvised and has more balls than most ECM stuff.( I'm not saying Gnu High doesn't have balls) For what it's worth it's great to hear Dave Beck on this kind of release, he really is a fantastic drummer, very creative and great sound, chops to burn too but never for chops sake. Maybe you could file near some free Jarrett stuff (always let me go), at least that has the piano drum thing, or maybe earlier stuff with Charles Lloyd. Or fuck it, tell em it is what it is.

well Jelly Roll Morton sometimes used the piano/reeds/drums format..............as did Cecil Taylor for many years........so I guess somewhere in the middle?
Not really, but that's probably as close as you'll get within the format foisted onto you!

Thanks aj and 'guts. I have until tomorrow (Friday) to decide, so I'll mull it over. I'd prefer "File between: B for bloody good and F for free improvisation", but they wouldn't like that.
I agree about Dave Beck. He is there when it counts on this outing, but never overbearing or clamouring for attention. All three work wonderfully together.

Try Tim Berne Hardcell (Berne, Craig Taborn, Tom Rainey), an incredible band I heard last year with CDs available from Tim's own web site

Yep they're great, but Graig plays so differently from PG, and Tim from Jamie. Bottom line is the 'file' request is crap. Maybe should file between PG Trio and Jamie Oehlers Quartet, that's as accurate as you'll get, though I do like "File between: B for bloody good and F for free improvisation". Maybe you should suggest people buy it and file it themselves, if they can work it out.

I like the idea of 'file between'. If I'm not well-acquainted with the local talents in a particular style, I'd love to know roughly what it sounds like. That said, to us it is kind of offensive to label our colleagues like that.
Yeah... so after that constructive comment I have no idea where I'd 'file' Lost and Found.

I think guts has got it. Paul G trio and Jamie 4tet, that way there's the possibility of the reader going and buying two or three local albums.

As if reviewing isnt hard enough.....
Maybe Beirach and Leibman when they are playing free?
the playing on Lost and Found is more succinct and lyrical to my ears - and theres Beck of course..... great music - good luck Rog.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I've been a bit distracted (destroyed?) by other issues, namely my wife's health. Not good news, but we'll make it.
Re the Lost and Found file between, I take Gator's point about Paul G trio and Jamie 4tet, and I'll always back anything that will encourage readers to buy more albums by locals.
But I've taken the easy way out and put "File between: Any great free improvisers." Not as good as B for bloody great music etc, but OK.
Yes, it's a copout, but it does give some idea of what's in store. And it saves a line compared with spelling out the PG Trio and Jamie 4tet (every line counts).
In the end, it's all about getting reviews of jazz in a paper that is leaning more and more towards the popular fare. I'm hanging in there.

Hey Rob, I unfortunately missed the review, due to the fact that it's next to impossible to get the melbourne papers here in perth...any chance of posting it or email it to me? Cheers - Jamie
