Yup, we got one - a shortlist for the 2008 National Jazz Writing Competition! 57 entries. Ten on the shortlist. Next step is to pick the top 3, which the judges say is going to be tricky. Lots of great stories. Note the presence of musicians and well-known enthusiasts on the list... www.jazz-planet.com/njwc

Hi Punter, the three winning stories will be published in the first issue of extempore www.extempore.com.au, which is going to be launched at Wang, on the Friday night (31st Oct). The other shortlisted stories will be appearing in subsequent issues. I'm sorry there's such a delay between the announcement and the stories being available to read, but this year being the journal's first issue we've had to bring everything forward so I can get the thing designed, printed and in my hand a little earlier than normal. Ah well, they say that anticipation is the greater part of pleasure... don't they? Miriam

they say that anticipation is the greater part of pleasure... don't they? Well I could think of better ways to promote your mag than that.

The winner was someone who really captured the spirit of the music in their piece. It is a wonderful piece of writing full of inspiration and hope. I'm sure everyone will agree that the winners story will capture the hearts of many.

Feck! Forgot to tell my mates on ozjazzforum! Sorry everybody... winners were as posted on aforementioned site (thanks guts) www.jazz-planet.com/njwc and the night was fun, albeit scary. I had my new red shoes on so I could click my heels and return to Kansas if things got desperate - but all turned out okay. Allan Browne was a great announcer and told everybody he liked the stories. Adrian Sherriff played like only Adrian can... and I had mobs of comments from audience members about how much they liked the trombone / bongo combination. A thought for those of you out there who might be interested! Interesting experience to introduce the idea of a jazz writing comp to a bunch of writers. Almost as interesting as introducing it to a bunch of musicians... My deepest apologies for missing the apostrophe in a previous post. Please try and forget I did it - I know I will! The stories will be available in extempore ( www.extempore.com.au) when it comes out (1 November) Too long to wait, I know, but this year's timelines got all messed up with all the juggling. Thanks for all the support I've had on here and off-line. It tells me this comp is worth persevering with when people take an interest ...
