Hullo folks. The opening night of my sextet's regular monthly gig at the Rainbow Hotel, 27 St. Davids Street, Fitzroy will be on next Monday, 15th September, at 8pm. We will be playing there on the 3rd Monday of each month, and we hope to build it into a really popular gig. In future months we will be having Special Guests of various kinds, and I'll let you know who they will be as each gig comes up.
The Rainbow is a cosy, friendly place with a beaut atmosphere. In a month or two they will have their dining room open 7 days a week (at present it is only open from Wednesday to Sunday) so that you will be able to have dinner there first, and then see the show afterwards. Again, news of when that will happen will be provided.
We are trying to give people the feel of what going to a New York jazz club might have been like in the late '50s and through the '60s. We will be playing the music of such greats as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, J. J. Johnson's sextet, the Miles Davis sextet and lots of others. This music is passionate, swinging, committed jazz, and we hope you will like it. We have a wonderful young trumpeter called Pat Thiele, who deserves wide recognition for his playing. Other young players are Dan Scully (tenor sax), Adam Duffy (drums) and Daniel Ossher (piano). The band is underpinned by the solid, experienced Ben Harmsen on bass.
Thanks for your time in reading this. I hope we will see you next Monday or, if not, on a subsequent one.
Best wishes, Don Jordan.
