Be that as it may, this is a musical forum not a political one so I was primarily kinda excited about the sterling work (both in conception and execution) that pianist had done as well as the larger interesting general area of speech rhythms/pitches...

Yeah yeah yeah. She's still scary. I assume you have Jason Moran's records where he does the same thing?
Apparently Hermeto Pascoal has similar concepts in his music, and there are also some fine example in Frank Zappa's ouvre that contain speech based melodies.

Yes, I've heard Jason Moran's amazing stuff with speech.
Paul Grabowsky has made the point in interview about setting the libretto for his opera regarding jazz and speech rhythms.
I sure it's all old news for someone as fantastically well-informed as you.
I just thought it would be somewhat novel to talk about music here. So thanks for the heads up about Zappa and Pascoal.

Paul wrote an Opera? Never knew that. Would be interested to hear it... (or see it?)

Jokes aside, its a very very good area to explore, especially for improvisers who might otherwise be locked into rhythmic cliches.
Coltrane playing his poems is another great example. I like 'Drum Thing' off crescent, I think the freely phrased sax melody is possibly one of his poems.
