Stonnington Jazz 2009 - the Best 100% Australian Talent
Australia boasts some of the finest jazz talent in the world and Stonnington Jazz 2009 will once again be showcasing the very best in an outstanding program from 14 – 23 May.
Now in its fourth year, Stonnington Jazz has established itself as an important forum for Australian Jazz, its 100% Australian program featuring many of the country’s top performers and composers, plus a host of rising stars on the Australian jazz scene.
Underlining the Australian flavour of this year’s event, most of the program will celebrate the music of Australian composers, from the renowned Peter Sculthorpe (named one of Australia’s 100 Living treasures in 1998) to legends like Graeme Bell and Paul Grabowsky, Paul Kelly and Nick Cave, to indigenous artists like Kutcha Edwards and Joe Geia, as well as original and improvised music from the likes of the Scott Tinkler and Jex Saarelaht quartets.
This year, the program will feature over 20 shows in Stonnington venues across ten days, and include jazz legends like Vince Jones, Don Burrows, Allan Browne and Paul Grabowsky, alongside some of the shining lights of the younger generations, such as Megan Washington, Stephen Magnusson and Gian Slater.
Concerts will once again be held at the Malvern Town Hall in Glenferrie Road, and Chapel Off Chapel in Little Chapel Street, Prahran, both of which will be transformed into intimate Jazz club settings for the duration of the festival. The Festival will also once again umbrella concerts in numerous venues across Stonnington.
Adrian Jackson, Artistic Director of Stonnington Jazz, says this year’s line up is one of the most diverse and exciting yet, and provides an excellent opportunity for lovers of all jazz styles to enjoy both established and emerging talents.
“I think we can describe two events as major coups for Stonnington Jazz. These are the concerts providing a retrospective of Vince Jones’ career, and some of the many brilliant musicians who have worked with him over the past three decades; and the concerts where Phil Slater will interpret the music of Peter Sculthorpe, with a great line-up of Sydney jazz musicians, plus the Silo String Quartet and Tim Freedman from the Whitlams.
“But there is a wealth of other musical experiences on offer, featuring artists as diverse as Chris McNulty, Nichaud Fitzgibbon, Don Burrows, Scott Tinkler and Steve Magnusson. Some artists will be coming from interstate, and one, Chris McNulty, will be visiting from New York where she now lives. But the majority of performers will be locals, a fact which emphasises what an exceptionally fertile music scene we have here in Melbourne.”
Tickets range in price from $10 to $38 and can be purchased by contacting Chapel Off Chapel Box Office on 8290 7000 or going to www.chapeloffchapel.com.au
