Gee, wish I could read all that. I only like drummers that don't play the drums, then there's no issue, they just play music, easy. Oh yeah, I'm a lesbian so I might be wrong. Good point, and....

I only like pianists that don't play the piano, then there's no issue, they just play music I only like bass players that don't play the bass. . . . they just play the music I only like guitarists that don't play the guitar . . . they just play the music I only like commentators who think they're profound but are just shallow

I only like pianists that don't play the piano, ... I only like bass players that don't play the bass. . . . I only like guitarists that don't play the guitar . . . I only like commentators who think they're profound ... Technically, the "only'' in these should be as close as possible to the pianists, bass players, guitarists and "profound" commentators mentioned, as in "I like only pianists who ...". If I only like pianists, it could mean that I don't, for instance, love them, suck up to them or make love to them. This is not meant to be a profound comment. Nor is it

Now that's some pedantry for Tim to be proud of.
Here here!

Some pedantry of which he can be proud?

I was going to go over-the-top, but I decided that putting two things in that post to "irk" Tim was quite sufficient.

Okay, hardi-ha.
But you know who's responsible for this 'drums not the music' crack, don't you?
Allow me to quote:
'Current drummer Dave Beck was an unexpected collaborator for Stevens to choose, given his occasional propensity to play the drums rather than the music.'1
None other than John Shand, who was so pleased with this turn of phrase he gave it another run in Jazz: The Australian Accent.2
1 Firstly: wrong, and secondly: from Limelight, January 2005. 2 On p. 171, in relation to Simon Barker.

Dave Beck? I'd expect more of Shand, oh well, he can't hear here then.

I'm a drummer, so I can't hear anything, let alone here here it.

I have today bought vented earplugs for soundchecks. Not to save me from drummers, but from incompetent sound engineers who stare with a puzzled expression at their desk with no sound going through it, turn everything up to try and get a result and then suddenly toggle a switch that was flipped the wrong way, unleashing sonic terrorism through the wedges on the hapless musicians onstage.
The vented ones let enough sound through to play (at a soundcheck anyway).

Hi Mark
What brand are they? What level attenuation?
I too bought some recently, -10db attenuation, which was the minimum available. Phonak, a Swiss brand, where you have to have a cast taken of your ear canal (weird sensation!) and then they make up plugs from that to fit snugly.
Anyway, I lasted about 3 mins at the first soundcheck. I had no idea if I was playing loudly or softly. I hope you have better luck.
