I thought I'd share with those who may be interested that I will be in New York in a couple of weeks to attend the premiere of a commissioned work of mine for trumpet and chamber ensemble written for classical trumpeter Brent Grapes especially for his Masters recital at Julliard.
Brent was from Perth originally and I think he spent some time in Melbourne. He is a remarkable player and the YouTube link here will give some idea of his capabilities. He doesn't play jazz but loves it, I introduced him to Scott Tinkler's playing and he was knocked out of course.
The brief is that I would compose him a "crossover" work and I have done my best to write him notated stuff that sounds improvised.
The ensemble itself is "crossover": trumpet, flute, clarinet, piano, string quartet, bass and drums.

Nice player, hope it all goes well, look forward to hearing it. Funny thing is I've been working hard on improvising stuff that sounds notated! Ha, life is funny. Who wrote the piece he's playing here?
He has a great name too.
