I would like to announce that on Sunday August 9 I will be playing a solo piano show at Bennetts Lane (original room) as a Benefit for the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative. Naturally I will play without a performance fee. Bennetts Lane have themselves generously agreed to waive some normal standing costs on this occasion to maximise fundraising. Having initiated and helped organise - as well as performing in - a very successful fundraiser for SIMA last year, I know that ancillary efforts like raffling prizes can add a lot of value. I will be putting forward a pack of my CDs (new and back catalogue) as one prize. I ask any interested parties to put their thinking caps on to see if they can donate - or suggest to others that they donate - prizes that could be raffled on the night. These could come from supportive retailers (we had wine, musical equipment etc as prizes at the Sydney one) or artists of repute might even be willing to donate a "lesson" to be raffled off to an aspiring student or amateur musician/music lover. Have a think Melbourne people if you can assist the MJC, I'm sure we all agree it's a most worthy organisation. If you have ideas please email me directly at markisaacs@optusnet.com.au rather than posting here.

Is there a Melbourne musician of some note prepared to donate a one-hour lesson to be raffled as a prize to help raise funds for the MJC?

Melbourne Fringe had a massive raffle at Big Arse Sunday one year where they got local musicians/musos to donate their own recorded cds. In the end they amassed over 60 cds and they raised quite a bit, I recall. You could also perhaps auction off musician/s to play "in your own home". Like charities do with Chefs.

I got auctioned off at the SIMA fundraiser to play at a private party. Winning bid was of the order of $600 I believe. Guy never called it in. Go figure. It was worth more to him if I didn't play. Like a friend commented about that recent book by Barry Humphries: the really valuable copies are the ones that aren’t signed.
There hopefully will be a retailer coming on board with a CD pack to compliment mine, so I think we are awash with CDs. Musicians need them for promotion anyway.

Mark, maybe next time you should raffle the fact that you won't play at someones house. Guaranteed. May be worth more to some?

I wouldn't take the lack of follow up as a comment on your worth, Mark.
Having worked in NGOs for 15 + years raising funds, I know that with auctions people often don't come back to collect the goods, they just bid cos they can afford to and like to be supportive to the cause.
On the CD matter - I know there are many great artists here in Melbourne who would prefer their CDs out and about rather than gathering dust under the bed. I know several who have hundreds that they can't shift, sadly. But it was just a suggestion.
I won't be there, sadly, as I'm going to Sydney for a long weekend to see some band called Resurgence and catch up with mates.

I wouldn't take the lack of follow up as a comment on your worth, Mark. Thank you Vicki - and for the suggestion. I wasn't taking it to heart that the guy didn't call on me after paying for me. It may be a shocking thing for an Australian to say but I actually am completely confident of my worth so was having fun joking around about it. It was just a touch odd that he didn't take it up, and it felt vaguely like I was "paid" for a gig I didn't do. He would have had to organise the "function" to take up his prize, so I guess in the end it was too much trouble. I would have gone around and played some tunes for him personally for donating $600 to SIMA. Look forward to seeing you at the Resurgence gig in Sydney.

But addressing that issue makes sense, if people who can't be at the gig want to participate in the fundraising around the prizes there should be a mechanism. We were already thinking about (silent) bids rather than raffle tickets. eBay is a good idea, I will investigate their fundraiser pages. If someone can't be there and has a proxy in the room bids can happen on the night on their behalf. Or eBay could be still active in real time during the live bidding, even via iPhones. Aaarghhhh it's all too complicated! Need an experienced fundraising manager! Are you volunteering?

Currently working 14 hour days, sleeping 3 -4 hours per night, hyped to the max and on the edge of a manic episode. Probably, not a good idea just now. Putting items up for auction for charity on Ebay is the BEST way to do it. They have a special section just for that and it means you don't have to do the work. MJC must have an NFP status, surely? Sorry can't help this time, happy to do it next time but need MUCH more notice. Like 4 months at least. Maybe Helen Burberry, and her team of whiz kids can help on that. They'd do a really good job I'm sure.
