I'm sorry Mr Guts left us too, maybe we should throw a wake.

I got an email saying that 'Ironguts' has left and that Lloyd Swanton and John McCall have joined. No offense to Lloyd and John but can we trade them in to get the colourful and insightful Ironguts back?

As a mediteranean hot head who has sometimes left the building vowing never to return, I would suggest that we lobby the golden Guts to return but keep the other two as well.

Lobby away but I hope you don't succeed. Quite a number of people have privately messaged me that they are happy to now contribute to this forum since he has gone. That's been a constant theme over the years. I'm not going to go into any more detail except to say it's far broader than my own stoushes with him. I am personally happy to see the back of him here and the front of him anywhere else, particularly with horn in hand. But that's just my opinion (and that of some anonymous like-minded souls here).

I'd welcome him back. I always felt he was a thoughtful and honest contributor, and even his idiosyncratic sense of humour was never sufficiently offensive to outweigh the value of his perspective. There have certainly been more conspicuous time-wasting dickheads here over the years, and most of them wouldn't have been as happy as he was for you to know their actual identity.

There's certainly diversity of opinion on the matter. I'm not privileging my own view despite my administrator status, expressing it honestly is just my nature as it is yours Tim. You're right, I thought he was very forgiving of me "outing" him and I said so publicly (and privately) at the time. That hasn't changed but it's long gone now, a lesson for me and a mistake I shall not make again. I just feel on balance debate is more robust here with more participants without him. That's quite demonstrable empirically. As wide-ranging a debate as possible is why I set up the forum, if I may be permitted to have a goal for it. So losing one for the sake of the many seems in line with that to me.

Because if I were him and I were back I'd be ripping into Mark's last entry.

Achromatic, maybe, but incognizance is my forte......
or was it.... incoherent......

That's quite demonstrable empirically. I may have missed a slab of the forum's history, but did Guts go of his own accord, or was he pushed? Does the reference to "outing" mean Mark pressed the delete button? Regardless, I can't see how Guts could have stopped any forum dwellers from expressing their points of view, no matter how expletively he expressed his. Some may welcome his disappearance (as it happens, I do not), but surely contributors to debate were free to put a view that differed from that of Guts without suffering too greatly. Are we talking Underbelly here? Is the horn a lethal weapon?

Are we talking Underbelly here? Is the horn a lethal weapon? Guts was not pushed to go. I did not delete his account, he did. It was unexpected. Absolutely no coercion was involved. The outing was referenced by Tim. Since he has brought it up I should clarify it for those who were not around. Nearly four years ago I took objection to a post by Ironguts and revealed his identity. It was taken well and I apologised for it and have made a commitment that I would "out" no-one again. Since Guts participated voraciously in the forum since then I do not believe it has any bearing on his recent departure. I assume Tim brought it up to remind me of the positive aspects of Guts. However I have never suggested his participation was wholly negative. No-one has suggested that Guts presence curtails their freedom in a coercive way. They have said that the atmosphere was such that they chose not to participate. That's no reason for him to have to leave. However, I feel at liberty to point out an upside to his departure which can surely be placed alongside those who are expressing the alternate view in this thread. People are free to campaign for him to return and he is free to rejoin. I trust I am also free to express my own opinion and report in general terms what has been said to me by some.
