Guts was not pushed to go. I did not delete his account, he did. ... Nearly four years ago I took objection to a post by Ironguts and revealed his identity... Thanks for the background, Mark. As a "newbie" it interests me that some people posting want to remain anonymous, though it has always seemed as if the regulars know the identity of most posters. Does anonymity give people freedom to express opinions they would not pass on face to face? Clearly posters ought to have the right to hide their identity, but to me it makes sense to be up front, say what you think and cop any resultant flak. Probably it is different for musicians involved in the politics of the music business. Anyway, possibly Guts has jettisoned one identity to assume another. He could be lurking among us in a new guise. Only golfing references need give him away ... or perhaps a whiff of the wrong sort of atmosphere.

It won't be the golf, it would be the grammar - Mr. Guts would have been the first to point that out. When you 'outed' him Mark, I thought everyone knew already it was Mr Tinkler though I later heard a rumour that he was spreading verbal misinformation about his 'true identity'. There are a few 'portals' that people in the community know about, I am fairly sure. That's ok with me. I would like to have him back here. He was often provactive and at times very funny indeed.

Has Guts set up an alternative soap box? Mate - if you're going to use the Spooks analogy - I reckon as a journalist you should cultivate your own sources. I for one ain't making it too easy for you.

But surely you realise investigative journalism is dead ... no resources, no staff, no time. These days the reporters are the punters out there with mobile phone cameras who can grab an image of Tom Cruise emerging from a King St nightclub and releasing an unknown woman from his arms before king-hitting an AFL player. I'll taste some sources

Of course, Guts would love us talking about him so much...

Provocative meets proactive. Crikey Stevens, you are morphing into some kind of weirdo superhero Pedant-Man. (Google superhero, Tim.) But that was funny - and probably some kind of grammatical Freudian slip on my part - or just sloppy typing. Take your pick.

Clearly posters ought to have the right to hide their identity, but to me it makes sense to be up front, say what you think and cop any resultant flak. Probably it is different for musicians involved in the politics of the music business. During the week preceding the infamous outing Iron Guts was particularly vocal on some issues. But so was stinkler, on the same issues. They didn't always agree with one another. In fact, I remember siding with Scott in an argument against Guts. I remember another aliased member of the community, johnny mastropoulos, sharing an interesting insight with me in relation to the guts situation (I didn't yet know his identity; mr. mastropoulos did). He said (something along the lines of) using an anonymous moniker can be not necessarily to express views that you don't want to own publicly, but to express views that you yourself don't actually hold, or that only part of you thinks. It can be used just to play devils advocate. Made sense to me, particularly once I found out Guts identity. Since then I am not so quick to make assumptions about the person behind the alias.

Certainly he's being missed on this forum which has gone into its shell since his departure.

Certainly he's being missed on this forum which has gone into its shell since his departure. I dunno. We got 10 pages of responses to my First-name terms thread. Admittedly, 9 were about Wynton Marsalis.
