Maybe it was because I had been deprived of live music for three weeks (away on holidays and the Great Victorian Bike Ride), though I believe it had more to do with the quality of the musicians, but what an enjoyable gig it was at Bennetts Lane on Tuesday. Tim Stevens, Ben Robertson and Dave Beck are just superb together and it was a real joy to be there and close my eyes and appreciate the music.
I had an interview with Branford Marsalis today for 15 minutes and he seemed to accept that for most Americans music is background material and that very few of his non-muso friends would actually put on a CD, sit quietly and listen. That may well be true here also, but it seems a great pity.
What a treat to hear musicians who are so totally into the music and not into their egos, and who interact so creatively. All credit to Martin Jackson and the MJC. Let's hear more of this trio in 2010.

Will you publish/post the branford interview? Eventually it will appear in the Herald Sun and I daresay a slightly longer version will be on ausjazz.net to show what the sub-editors have left out. It was a short talk, with a guardian giving a warning at 13 minutes and then a wind-up at 15, but Branford had some interesting views. There was only a passing mention of Wynton.
