Not our fault if his ears are too small, yet still much larger than his brain!

I have a different take. I like people who have the guts to speak their mind even if they know it will bring howls of derision from true believers, so I like Stephen Hough and Andrew Marr even though I love Bach and I love jazz. But one can have too much of a good thing (as I have had of Christmas food today). When I've had enough of jazz and need something else to change the taste, what I need a break from is jazz's obsession with the linear, or more specifically the Single Line, so something about the "up and down and roundabout" mentioned in Marr's chiding resonates with me in the sense that when I have had a gutful of jazz that's what I've had a gutful of, just as when one has had too much cheese - no matter how much one adores it - well, animal fat is the culprit. Most of the rest of his criticism is unfair and could easily apply to most any other artform, but it's a good read and better than most of the other tripe that appears in newspapers. Somebody should put together a whole book where various people articulately twist the tits of sacred cows. Sushi bloody sushi would be another good one to take down (to continue with my culinary line).

Great read. Tongue firmly in cheek with most of them, and they all make good points!

Well, let's face it - we aren't all going to like everything. How dull if everyone agreed that Romeo&Juliet is a masterpiece.
Broad, sweeping statements made Grumpy Old Men... Reasoning and thoughtfulness would kill any humour. I like the though of people getting wound up about their loathing of Carmen, or Howard's End!

Yeah, I just get annoyed when some tosser decrees that all jazz is this or that.........what, all of it? Shades of the global warming denials of Nick Minchin or Andrew Bolt ... what, none of the science is worth taking notice of? Marr says jazz "doesn’t make me excited, sad, wobbly, calm or indeed anything much". If he's serious, that's pretty sad. Either he hasn't listened to the right jazz (perhaps he's heard Diana Krall perform Jingle Bells) or he's impervious to any music. More likely he's merely doing the Andrew Bolt trick — writing to order with the intention of being controversial. It's tempting to say that any publicity (for jazz) is good publicity, but unfortunately it all contributes to the stupid idea that jazz is always inaccessible, so that people don't even try listening to it. Meantime, does anyone see a resemblance between Marr and someone closer to home? (I hope these pics work) Attachments:

OT nice to be chatting here again. To some extent Facebook and other social networking media are going to make forums like this a bit redundant I suspect, but hopefully this will sputter along (soon to enter its 10th year). You can attach things here now, though the 1MB limit is not much good for music files.
