I'd like to add that I was slightly misquoted in that article.
I don't believe I said "always" to the journalist in "Melbourne has always claimed itself as the jazz capital", I'm usually careful with my language and wouldn't say such a thing. It's been pointed out to me already that Eric Myers made a similar claim about Sydney being the "jazz capital" in 1980 so that quote as published would be untrue, especially as others are on record lamenting the state of the Melbourne jazz scene in the same period.
That all does concur with my recollection expressed in the article that the late 70s were the last period of burgeoning jazz activity in Sydney.
