For anyone who by some chance missed the arts pages of Melbourne's Herald Sun today, my Wayne Shorter interview has appeared ... on the day of the concert. (Better late than never.) Because this material never makes it online at the Herald Sun website, I've posted it at the ausjazz.net blog: wp.me/pvEKr-bW

I think it probably goes without saying that this was another great gig from this band. And for me, it's the band thing that stands out. Yes, they're four amazing musicians, but they're a band above that. I'm sick of "all-star" line-ups where there's no great rapport. Give me a great band any day.
And, might I add, the sound was pretty bloody good for the Palais. My only qualm was that Tinkler was a little loud in the support set.

My only qualm was he was too soft to wear his new Shark hat.

I agree about Tinkler, though it was great to hear him fill that huge space. But he did seem to dominate and overwhelm Magnusson. But as for Shorter, his band members were superb musicians, but the style of music did not do it for me. I kept hoping for a longer Shorter solo, but it never happened. The others all worked hard, but he seemed to play a few notes and then lose interest. And while it was great to see Blade in action, there was too much "frantic action CRASH, frantic action CRASH for my taste. I'd like to have heard what else he can do. Was it wrong to hope to be moved by Shorter? It all seemed angular, sharp, abstract, intellectual and not really moving. Where was the emotion?

I know what you mean about Brian's playing, but I don't think that there was more "frantic action crash" than normal, it's just that the other stuff he did was a little un-memorable. It could seem a little unbalanced. There certainly wasn't as much distinct groove as I've heard in other Shorter Quartet concerts. As for Shorter's playing, he seemed almost like he just couldn't find his spot in the band that night. Maybe the sound wasn't right for him, or he wasn't hearing what he wanted from the others - I don't know. One fellow audience member pointed out to me that Danilo Perez didn't really stop playing all night either. I didn't notice that personally at the time though. Either way, I enjoyed the concert, and I did feel that there was emotion there, and certainly energy from Perez, Blade and Patitucci.

An interesting article from Mr Clare. Anyone else see the Sydney gig? To be honest, I hardly looked at Wayne throughout the Melbourne show! Couldn't even tell you how much sop he played.

just to add a contradictory viewpoint, shorter was by far the highlight of the (melbourne) concert for my money... not many notes but every one had weight imho, unlike some of the other band members
