More great shows, Allan Browne's Celebration of 50 Years in Jazz was sensational, the first set featured Margie-Lou Dyer and Jo Stevenson performing heaps of fantastic trad numbers from Morton, Armstrong plus a couple composed by Margie and Allan respectively. The second set featured the launch of Une Saison en Enfer (available through JazzHead). Performing with Allan were Phil Noy, Nick Haywood, Eugene Ball and Geoff Hughes, the suite inspired by the poetry of Artur Rimbaud is penned by Eugene and Geoff. The next couple of nights sees the focus at Chapel Off Chapel with the Rai Thislethwayte and Phil Stack Trios. Went to hear one of my favourite bands on one of their infrequent trips to Melbourne - 10-part Invention. On coming in to the room, I thought "Cripes - the band's full of old people! What's going on?" Then I realised that Time was up to her usual tricks, and these were the same folk as before. To my delight they played their wonderful compositions with the same energy and verve as ever. You know, when you look at people who are older than about 30 - as you walk down the street, do your shopping, and so on - do you realise that most of them think and feel as if they were still in their '20s? That's the hideous trick that Time plays. Try and look at people in this way - see past the grey hair, wrinkles, physical infirmities, etc. - and realise that we're all still full of hopes and expectations of good things; we respond to beauty and love with passion and excitement; we still want to think that we can do and be anything we want to; that life is precious and to be celebrated while we have a breath in our bodies. None of us wants to die, but we know we have to one day. The older we get, the larger the pit looms - but we don't want to take any notice of that. So, if you see an oldie trying to be a 20, both have pity and take heart, and join us in our celebration of our interior eternal youth!!
