Don't want to hijack the thread, Mark, but what are you doing posting here at 10 past 5 in the morning? Everything okay? Everything's OK, thanks for your concern Tim. I actually woke up with the thought that I wanted to put the "other side of the coin" to my musings as I have no wish to hurt the feelings of good people and don't wish it to be "personal". The discussion is everything, and that's of course why I started the forum. However, activity at 5:10am is not an uncommon occurrence for me. Maybe not uncommon for you either? You're here pretty early too, by jazz standards.

I'm sorry but the original comment "None of this means anything at all" is disrespectful to the nominees and the eventual winner especially in light of the fact the comment was made on its own without further explanation. That Tim has now expanded upon it is admirable but doesn't excuse the original comment. I am not the only person who feels this way about the comment & have had discussions regarding it with two of the nominees.
In respect of your comments concerning the lack of turnover of administrators in respect of jazz & music awards etc I will watch this discussion with great interest given the elephant sitting in the corner of the room.

I'm sorry but the original comment "None of this means anything at all" is disrespectful to the nominees and the eventual winner especially in light of the fact the comment was made on its own without further explanation. That is totally untrue. My lack of respect for the award and my feelings about individual musicians and their work are two completely different things. Some of the ARIA-nominated records may be wonderful, others may not; that is undoubtedly a matter of opinion. As it turns out, with the exception of Silverwater I haven't actually heard any of them. But I didn't make direct remarks about any of the nominees, and my original comment pertained only to the awards themselves. They are meaningless. Even if I won one, which probably I never shall, I should feel the same way unless the process had been radically reformed. Certainly I am not gnashing my teeth and consuming away, waiting for the approval of the anonymous ARIA judges. If the winner gets a few more sales, fabulous. That's about the best that can be hoped for.

I'll leave aside the pros & cons of someone holding a position such as festival director for 20+ years (that's probably a whole other can of worms), and address the question about the process of voting on the jazz ARIAs. I suggest there are two issues here. (1) The people involved in the 'jazz' industry who vote for the ARIAs (and I have been one of these for many years). I agree these judges' identities should be available to those who are interested ; and I can see some merit in the argument that such positions might be rotated/varied, although I'm sure that still wouldn't eliminate every possible complaint. (2) Those people involved in the music/recording industries who have no knowledge of, or interest in, jazz, yet are entitled to cast a vote if they feel like it. ('Oh, I've heard of X, or I met Y once, so I'll give them a vote'). I'd suggest the organisers might do well to exercise a little more control over who votes in what category.
As for what the ARIAs mean : I certainly don't think they mean that the 'winner' was the only good record released that year, or even necessarily the best. In some years I believe that, in my opinion, the result was right ; in some years I've thought it was very wrong. But if the process gives a little more oxygen, in the form of media interest/airplay, to one or a few jazz albums, that has to be a good thing. And if the 'winner' draws a little reassurance or confidence from the award, or maybe gets a couple of extra gigs or some extra CD sales, good luck to them.

AJ, how does ARIA work out the finalists? As I understand it, either record labels or artists nominate their albums. This provides an initial list of maybe 30 or so options. The ARIA invites a long list of people to be judges ; based on those votes, the list of nominations is culled to a shortlist ; and the judges are then asked to vote for the eventual winner from that shortlist.

Oh well, put $20 on it then. You can safely bet your house that I will offer a rejoinder to you posts though ;-)

And of course the other downside of the ARIAs is that they only represent albums released on labels that are members of ARIA, which I imagine exludes a number of excellent releases in this country every year.

So do the AIR awards cover all those albums not covered by the ARIAs? Or are they meant to? (I suspect there is some overlap).
