WANGARATTA, BRISBANE, CAIRNS DATES, 505
The catholics have a swag of dates coming up, with our first interstate visits for some time.
First up, with terrific guitarist Jess Green on board, will be two shows at the venerable Wangaratta Jazz Festival www.wangarattajazz.com/cms-program/ including a special show in the pristine acoustics of the Holy Trinity Cathedral focussing on material from our atmospheric Gondola album.
The following week, we're off for our first visit to Queensland in yonks, with shows at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Thursday 4th November www.brisbanepowerhouse.org/events/view/the-catholics/ (tickets for that show are already selling fast, so jump in quick) and in Cairns at The Tanks Arts Centre www.tanksartscentre.com/home/event.asp?eid=243 on Friday 5th.
Then, back in Sydney, with Gary Daley our guest on piano accordion, we'll be at 505 on Friday November 19th www.venue505.com/ Our last show at 505 brought the house down.
Sat 30th, Sun 31st October: WANGARATTA, Jazz Festival
Thu 4th November: BRISBANE, Powerhouse
Fri 5th November: CAIRNS, Tanks Arts Centre
Fri 19th November: SYDNEY, 505
20TH BIRTHDAY SHOWS AT THE SOUND LOUNGE, FRIDAYS 4TH AND 11TH FEBRUARY
In 1991, on the 4th and 11th of February, The catholics made their debut, with two sold-out concerts presented by SIMA at the Strawberry Hills Hotel in Sydney. In the week in between, we recorded our debut album.
Since then, we've released six more albums, plus a compilation, locally and internationally; toured Australia extensively, as well as Canada, Europe and Thailand; started our own record label; seen our repertoire expand from nine tunes to over sixty; and from a core group of seven players (three of whom are still with the group), played host to some stunning music-making by over thirty of Australia's best musicians; in the process offering at least a few suggestions as to how we think jazz might sound.
And leader Lloyd Swanton still can't get over how a project formed to record a few tunes has become an ongoing part of musical life in Australia.
It's been nothing but joy since the first show, and we invite you to come and kick off our next twenty years with two shows (rather appropriately, on the 4th and 11th, and again, presented by SIMA, all power to them) at the Sound Lounge in February. More details soon.
