I keep returning to those two early albums by Chick Corea on ECM, Light as a Feather and Return to Forever. They strike me as the most soulful and lyrical of Corea's work but with lacerating jazz content, particularly in Chick's and Joe Farrell's solos and Chick's amazingly percussive comping on Rhodes.
It also strikes me that jazz critics have historically underrated these works, though I suspect they'd wet themselves if a contemporary equivalent of such quality were released. In John Shand's excellent extempore article on the history of ECM he glosses over these two releases as well as Chick's two volumes of solo piano improvisations and the Crystal Silence duet with Gary Burton released in the same general period to declare that Dave Holland's Conference of the Birds which followed them was ECM's "first masterpiece". I wrote to John on this point and if Light as a Feather at the very least is not a masterpiece of 1970s jazz I don't know what is.

I also like Airto's drumming on that ECM RTF album.......light touch, but really kicks the music along, in tandem with Stanley's acoustic bass.
