Last Sunday started with my usual bout of post-12-hour-day crankiness, and Father's Day didn't get any better when I was hauled off to Prahran Market for lunch, with Deb's assurance of "They've got live jazz" fuelling my ill-humour, knowing all too well the sort of lame crap that is usual for such gigs.
Things got much worse when all ATMs in a six-block radius refused to spit out any dough for us to buy lunch.
We finally got one tucker outlet to let us chow down on credit - and then things brightened up a helluva lot.
The band was setting up in the market courtyard, with our own Gideon Brazil leading proceedings.
Then the music started - wow, what a pleasure and a treat.
Gideon on tenor was leading a pretty nifty organ-drums-guitar combo that was going pretty hard and rocking on stuff such Sister Sadie, Sandu and so on.
The volume/sound was just right - far from being wallpaper-for-eating but not obtrusive.
Talking to him after the first set, Gideon told he and the band were serious about pursuing this kind of groove music. This was their first gig and they were excited about it .
Seriously - this deserves to become a hot gig. Leave all baggage about dodgy jazz in these sorts of surroundings behind.
There's all sorts of food/drink options, the courtyard is enclosed and there's play gear, face-painting and so on for kids (and adults).
The music runs from noon-3pm. Check it out!
(Hey Gideon - next time Peebs has its week of live-to-air, you guys wanna come on The Pearls?) ;D
