Jeff Duff sings David Bowie and Frank Sinatra tonight! Renee Geyer does how many nights in the Jazz Lab?Tim Freedman some special performances!
at the "only dedicated Jazz venue in Australia"
Bennetts Lane R.I.P.
I wonder if Duff is still telling his Joan Collins jokes (they were funny in the 80s).

Now now now, children, Bennetts has to make a buck too every now and then. Perhaps OJF is being a little too hard on them hmmm...
Plus there are other music venues in Melbourne to go to like upstairs at the Cape Lounge - they have some great Jazz there so go check it out but make a paper money donation please - I was there on Tuesday and I couldn't believe how stingy all those youngsters are with their gold coin donations towards the band! And why do so many of these people think old baggy hand knitted tea pot cosies look good on their head?
I must share with OJFers that I am very happy today, the sun is shining and I am heading to my Mecca i.e. Wangaratta in less than four weeks - how many wonderful gigs will we hear? I am so excited! Sorry guys, but we women must gush every now and then, Wangaratta is like Chistmas, Hunnakah and Diwali rolled into one for me.
Yee hah! see you all there and don't forget your Zyrtec.

If I might venture an opinion as a non-Melburnian who plays regularly in Melbourne, Vicki I did also think some OJFers were being a bit tough on BL. I note that there are 2 rooms there, and as nice as 14 nights a week of non-mainstream jazz would be it seems understandable that (especially in the the big room) some more mainstream things are presented from time to time. Perhaps there would be nothing in the big room otherwise on those particular nights, and the idea of preferring an empty room unless you can get music that fits a particular genre seems crazily stringent. I remember similar things being said about The Basement, which of course now is not purely a jazz venue, but a live music venue that includes a substantial amount of jazz in its roster. It's an ideological change that caused undertandable anxiety, but I suppose you have to look at the global picture for venues in any given town. Even if the larger room at BL went more of the way of The Basement and the smaller room still retained a non-mainstream jazz policy it would still be a good look for Melbourne with the other venues around.

Yeah, I reckon you're spot on there Mark. Let's hope the littel room keeps presenting adventurous music...

There is an ideological change in the winds that chart a course for our cultural climate, it´s called economic open-mindedness. As far as I can see, local performers should feel complimented that larger, more commercial bands want to use their nieche venues. It´s both a compliment to Bennetts Lane and the arts. Bennetts Lane still seems to very pro on expanding and developing the borders jazz...all borders. I mean, the miopic view of some others here seem to take the BL program out of context, tell me, is there another venue with an 11 piece, all original, contemporary jazz band on a Monday night for a mere $10 (respectful price) , with award winning performers? Or that supports the MJC, the universities, obscure bands, so many internationals (Branford Marsalis trio for $10!)... or that encourages people to actually LISTEN to the music? Oh, yeah... that´s right... um... NO! I only wish Bennetts Lane could open more venues. The scene has never been stronger than it is now... directly attributable to the success and influence of this landmark, internationally acclaimed, progressive, focused and important venue. On the flip, it´s warming to hear so many people precious of it.
