I've said it before but I have a new spin on why weekday gigs should start earlier!
Punters could save money and spend more on CDs and going to gigs if you didn't have to pay for a cab home cos they go so late (especially during the week). I am not liking missing second set at Bennetts or anywhere else I go at night Sunday - Thursday cos of late starting gigs. Feel cheated and guilty!
Why can't they start at 8pm those days? Totally unfair! It is weird when you see half the audience leave Bennetts after the first set during the week I just don't get it.

Vicki, I agree totally (surprise, surprise!).
I'd say this is the facor that almost always comes into play when I decide to stay at home when I know there's an interesting gig going on somewhere.
That and the seemingly endless pauses-for-good-causes.
The cab/CD point makes sense, too.
Any of the players here care to comment?
It's crazy!

As I get older (which I do) I agree more and more. The late start and the awareness that one will only be able to stay for half the performance are very dissuasive, and recently although my intentions have been good, as 9pm takes so long to roll around I have on several occasions given up and chosen to say home. A midnight finish is not reasonable for most people on a weeknight. I remember doing a great many Mondays at Bennetts and being one of a total of six or seven people (including the band & Megan) still in attendance at the end. Starting at 9.45 leaves too big an interval between dinner and music, I reckon. Too easy to have another drink, see what's on the tube... This may sound slack but I really feel that if doors opened even at 8 and the music had started by half past it would be a lot easier to get out to hear things. Perhaps this serves notice of my impending fogey-dom, but I don't care.
